I don't understand... "High Fantasy"?

From Wikipedia: "High fantasy is a sub-genre of fantasy fiction, defined either by its setting in an imaginary world or by the epic stature of its charactersthemes and plot. Quintessential works of high fantasy, such as The Lord of the Rings,Malazan Book of the Fallen, and The Wheel of Time, have both of these attributes. High fantasy exists on one side of a spectrum, opposite low fantasy or urban fantasy, which are set in the "real" world. Some works, such as The Chronicles of NarniaThe Chronicles of Thomas CovenantThe Mortal Instruments, and The Neverending Story, concern characters that travel between realistic and imaginary settings, and are thus difficult to classify on this spectrum. High fantasy is often classified as epic fantasy; although the two subgenres are extremely similar, the latter usually contains a wider range of main characters."

I've enjoyed Lord of the Rings Online and Rift quite a bit. Rift has a better F2P model than most IMO; Lotro's isn't too bad either. Lotro can be quite the grind, however, if you don't enjoy Lord of the Rings that much (or just if the game rubs you the wrong way). Rift isn't as grindy level wise until you hit 51-60. Those are the two main ones I can think of off the top of my head that haven't been mentioned yet. Also I'd recommend keeping an eye on ArcheAge. It's not out yet, but will be F2P when it launches. Launch is supposedly later this year, beta starting mid-late july.

@@LowfatEnvelope,Could the Forgotten Realms, Neverwinter Nights, and games like that be called "High" Fantasy? You mean generally High Fantasy settings involve magic, swords, e.t.c.?

Yea, those are all High Fantasy I believe. I don't think it's really a set definition, but usually has some sort of mythical elements to it like dragons and magic and whatnot (like you mentioned) that's not set in our world. I'm not particularly well versed on the differences, just have a general idea. If someone has a better definition feel free to correct me. :P

To add to the games I mentioned earlier: There are actually two F2P D&D MMORPGs that I know of. The first is D&D online made by Turbine (Lotro creators) and is a bit old, and the second is called Neverwinter made by Cryptic Studios (published by Perfect World Entertainment, the Star Trek Online creators) and is far more recent (it's the one Shire Pony mentioned). I haven't played D&D Online so can't comment on it, and only briefly played Neverwinter (which was enjoyable but didn't grab me).

EDIT: There's also EverQuest and EverQuest II (not D&D games). Haven't played either of those very much though.

Yes very much so. High fantasy is a fantasy set in a non real world with no connection to ours. There maybe cultural similarities but no historical connection. High fantasy is also defined by its medieval magical setting, very few, if any machines or devices that are not found in a medieval setting, there are exceptions, but usually any devices like this are magical. Forgotten realms, the elder scrolls, Lord of the rings, and others like this are all high Fantasy. J.R.R. Tolkien, author of the Lord of the Rings, actually created the genre of high fantasy with the creation of The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, and all of his works involving Middle Earth.
