gaming Mario Kart 8 online is not that good.

I have been playing the game for 2 weeks and it isn't a game of skill. I feel like Nintendo really made this game about item combat. You're saying " That's what the series has always been about." Well in the newer games, no. Nintendo did some good things like getting rid of long range quake items such as the POW block and even that annoying lightning cloud. 

 

I have been averaging 4th to 6th place. For a veteran like me since the 64 days and skipping the handheld titles. I am not pleased with that. Basically you're competing for 4th place. Because the people who are in first or second are safe until a blue shell( if they have the horn ). It's like a giant mosh pit of item madness and less about drifting(another thing Nintendo nerfed and made easy) 

 

Anyone having the same issues? I love Mario Kart. This game is much better than the Wii version. But not even close to 64 or hell even Double Dash.

Havnt played it, but I'm kind of a bad person to talk about Mario kart for an online setting. I played back on the snes all the way to double dash and found those games are always just better with friends instead of strangers.

I don't bother with Mario Kart because its frustrating as sin to me as someone who values a level playing field in a racing game...and not getting a shell shoved up my ass every 2 seconds in 150cc :okiedokielokie:

Oooh, I forgot about the POW Block! I can't say I'm bothered that it was removed. In the end it only ever had the effect of randomly stripping you of coins and items, which is just annoying. =/

 

Anyway, my experiences have been a bit different. The game can just be annoying all-around. There are many, many races I ended up below sixth place where I led the entire race up until somewhere in the third lap. I realized that the game certainly has a pattern in that regard.

I'm working on 150cc now and it's irritating. Because I haven't unlocked the pipe frames from Mario Kart 64 in the Kart select options. I only get lucky if the blue shell(s) are never in those rounds.

Also, Toad is no longer my best character like he was in 64. I have Daisy now and she's the best racer in the past couple of games.

Mario Kart is the poker of racing games; it's equal parts skill and luck. Once I accepted that I found myself enjoying the game MUCH more. There's ways to mitigate a lot of the randomness too; you're in first place? You better be cycling through those items as fast as you can until you get that boom-box, since it's the only thing that can stop a blue shell. While waiting for that item you need to be holding that left trigger since even a banana can stop a red shell. If you're hitting all of your boosts you'll almost always outpace a red shell, and if they were close enough to hit you without being able to out-pace it then you should have had a farther lead. It lends a certain element of strategy as-well; I almost never blast into first when a race starts since that's a quick way to get crappy items along with a huge target on you back.

 

So yeah, I don't expect to get in the top 3 every online race, but that's just the nature of the game. I find I much more enjoy the moment-to-moment gameplay when I stop getting mad every-time a red shell hits and I drop 3 places.

The Blue Shell really isn't quite as bad in this game as it was previously. Red Shells are a lot worse. 2nd place can get a Triple Shells now, meaning no matter what type of defense you ended up with (unless it was triple shells, extremely unlikely), you are out of luck.

 

Also those cursed green shells, they always "coincidentally" ricochet right into you. It drives me crazy when it happens, but I did laugh as one time I was playing on Toad's Turnpike, and I saw one miss me, ricochet off a wall, and somehow manage to end up in the path of the person in front of me.

 

Like... I'd rather be hit by a Blue Shell than a green shell. Green shells are the true devil in this game. lol Even though they're not supposed to home in on anybody, I swear they have a mechanism in them that does aim them at players. It's been this way since Mario Kart 7. In Mario Kart Wii and before Green shells were laughable unless somebody managed to actually hit you with one intentionally, now they seem to hit everybody all of the time.
