Why does Big Macintosh like Smarty Pants so much?

A lot of people think it's just a friendly jab at bronies. But how about this theory? Ma and Pa Apple passed on when Big Mac was at a fairly young age. As such, Big Mac had to take on working at the farm fairly early. Because of that, Big Mac lost most of his childhood, and thus never got the chance to own and enjoy a childhood toy, like Smarty Pants. So, by taking Smarty Pants for his own, Big Mac is simply making up for the childhood he lost. What do you think?

There's nothing to say it's wrong, but that doesn't make it right. Your headcanon, your rules, man. Although "Cutie Mark Chronicles" might have something you could claim is evidence for it. When Applejack leaves for Manehatten, we see Young MacIntosh. So the parents must have passed on when they all were young, leaving them in the care of Granny Smith.

In all likelihood, though, the writers probably didn't think further than "Hey, a joke we can use to nudge-nudge-wink-wink the bronies!"

I think it's just most likely a joke. I don't think the writers went into more then it was a joke. There is sometimes a lot of things the writers do without considering the logic, because they want to make their audience laugh or be in awe.

The writers likely intended it as a simple joke and possibly a reference to bronies, but if we are to dig a bit deeper the argument about his childhood could be a reason. Or it could be an odd little quirk Big Mac has that even he dosen't understand. Or he could have a crush on Twilight which I wouldn't blame him for in the least bit and Smary Pants might remind him a bit of her.

Because he actually really likes Twilight but could never bring himself to confess to her, so her old Smarty Pants doll is something he can secretly treasure.

Who knows, honestly it could be anything, maybe he simply likes it just because, but knows that he isn't suppose to, so tries to be secretive about it.

The original intention is probably a joke meant as a wink to bronies, but I'm sure there is a possibility of a logical reason if you want to theorize about it.

ggg-2 your theory is possible, but there isn't a ton to support the theory either. It's hard to say. But I do kind of like your theory regardless.

Maybe Big mac is just a softie inside despite looking tough on the outside.
