You know how all numbers are just a combination of the numerals 0-9? Well in a base 5 number system only the numerals 0-4 exist. There is no 5-9 in a base 5 number system. Counting goes like this: 

 

1 2 3 4 10 11 12 13 14 20 21 22 23 24 30 and so on.

 

Without all those extra numerals slowing us down, counting will go much faster! And It definitely isn't cheating, because 42 didn't say what number system we could and couldn't use!
