Once he saw the kindness of the ponies, it turned him, and he eventually became friends with Star Swirl (who wouldn't, he was awesome in the comics). I suppose in their quest to steal pony magic, the duo (Scorpan and Tirek) sought out strong, and capable pony magic practitioners - such as Starswirl. Celestia's phasing is "He did not understand friendship as you do."
