I'm American, but I hate my country!

At least we have the right to disagree, whereas in another country we could be put to death for saying something as simple as "I don't like it."

Actually, America would be more likely to do that than other nations. Because America is one of, I think 4 or 5 nations that still uses the death penalty. In fact, in America, you can be killed for a crime you didn't even commit.

You say this as if its a coomon occurance. Its not like we throw a person under the needle as often as the french did with the guillotine. Yes our judicial system is in need of work but at least we dont have death squads.

France doesn't do that anymore. But America does. :/

I was referring to fredom of speech. That thing we have that plenty of other countries don't.

Your right to free speech won't get you executed. The death penalty is reserved for acts of murder and in all honesty I'm pretty neutral on the death penalty myself. Yes, I have often believed that it's completely backwards but then you've got monsters like that guy who shot up the Aurora Theater and killed 12 people and I think that people that do horrific acts like that deserve to be killed outright!

This thread makes me a sad panda. Also causes much rage from the historian in me.

I don't judge the entirely of ANY nation of community of peoples based on the popularized ideals of even the majority. You can't even persecute an entire government based on the majority opinion of elected officials. The meme is an gross over-simplification of the situation and ignores some pretty glaring facts about the war. Sorry, but ignorance of history actually pisses me off when it is used as an emotional weapon. If you wanted to make that meme accurate you would replace the Nuke statement with one focused on firebombing since it caused more damage and had a higher death toll. Bah! That meme and the ideas I am reading here are akin to holding a modern day German citizen morally culpable for the actions of the Nazi Party. That is just plain bullshit. I am not responsible for the actions of my Government, my neighbors, my friends, my family, Andrew Jackson, George W. Bush, etc. Similarly I represent no one else. I have travelled abroad and have enjoyed Europe and the people there immensely. I am Jeric ... not America. Pleasure to make your acquaintance!

I personally haven't thought out 9/11 in a while, nor am I US centric in my world view. The fact that people in this thread cannot take a granular view of humanity and all of the complex facets of it makes me pity you. Imagine people complexly damn it.

The fact that my fellow Americans hate their country and even themselves makes me sad and more than a little worried. America was and still is one of the greatest countries in history. I won't lie, things are looking grim, but that's only because people keep letting themselves be spoon-fed untruths and led about like sheep and then refuse to do anything about it. You don't know how good something is until it's gone.

I completely agree with you, and over here, everyone does. But my country is pretty f***ed up as well. It's corrupt. I'm sure you're aware of the recession in Ireland. The sheer amount of homeless is disturbing. My dad's wages got cut by 2/6ths, not that it was that good in the first place.

Same here. The recession has also hit hard here. On top of that, we also have a political group called the PVV, that's all for transporting the Moroccans to the other countries. Sometimes I think the world would be better of if humans never existed

Hmm let's see, next to no welfare system, no publicly funded health service, terrible racism, out of control police, rampent gun crime... I have family in the States, I have a Green Card, but I would not like to live there on a permanent basis! Sorry!

The idea behind America was that you could come here and become whatever you wanted. It was assumed you were coming here to better yourself, not live on welfare.

You're generalizing. The thing you are mentioning aren't universally held beliefs. Plenty of people in America feel the opposite of those things. Maybe even the majority of them, on some of those. Homosexual equality has been gaining tons of momentum.

When I think about how I feel about America, I like to modify a Winston Churchhill quote. America is the worst country except for all the other ones. Its not perfect and there is plenty wrong with this country, but its the one I got. There are way worse places to live.

I agree with you, America is a decent place to live, if you earn a decent wage and can afford good health insurance. Of not, you're screwed!

How so?

1. I don't call handing out food stamps an adequate welfare system

2. Yes, Obama care has made things slightly better if you're poor, but here in the UK I know that if I go into a hospital I'll get treated, no questions asked!

3. You only have to go the south to see racism alive and kicking

4.Rodney King ring any bells?

5. Too many school shootings to mention!

#1. Again, what I was saying is the south has a bad name but it really isn't that bad. I find it kind of offensive to say that just the south is racist. It's plenty alive in the north too. Many of the southerners I've met are very friendly and aren't racist. Although it can be more common in the south, they are still very nice people down here.

#2. School shootings aren't America's fault. It's the people who shoot up schools' fault. American schools already have guards on campus to deal with things such as this. You can't blame the country for the shootings.

To play the Devil's Advocate that's getting kind of hard to do when jobs are being exported to China. Hell, up here in Canada the government set up this foreign worker program (which I believe should be abolished) that's really making it hard to get a job over here. For example you have places like Tim Horten's and McDonald's that are taking advantage of it by hiring foreigners over locals because employers can pay them less.

I am not fond of America either....I have a long laundry list things that I distaste to the utmost (I have many other posts about it). But in a nutshell, if I really think about America from the outside looking in, I am grateful to be here, compared to war torn countries, or countries where people have little freedom on top of government surveillance (not that America is any better in either camps, but at least we can choose little things for ourselves)....

Same in the united states even faster than in the uk or canada but our system basicly says its up to you to pay it while yours you pay threw taxes. A hospital in the dtates CANNOT turn away a patiant. They will just nickle and dime you. As for the racists you have a very incorrect look at our nations southern people. T.v and movies do not accurately show our southern people they only show the stereotype which you seem to believe which my good sir is a form of racism.

Yes you can blame the country! In the UK there was a school shooting at a place called Dunblane, the government banned handguns and guess what? No more shootings!

I agree. If I never came here to America, I would be stuck in an orphanage in China. I'm very grateful that my parents adopted me and took me here. I'm better off going to school and living like a normal child here in America than being in an orphanage with many other girls.

@@Rarity Paige Belle- There are still things like the black market. My point is that you can't get rid of it all together. Many people here are working on getting more gun control. Again, it's really not the fault of the country, just the people who shoot. America does what it can with guns. If you look up some of the rules on owning a gun in America, you will see that it has many rules set on it.

You can't just get rid of shootings over-night. Banning guns won't completely stop gun violence.

School shootings are not an everyday occurrence. But in that area od the uk you think a gun law is going to actually stop an unstable individual from getting their hands on one? If they want to shoot uo a school and that is their goal law or not sadly its going to happen.

I don't hate this country, but I don't like what it's become.

-We keep getting into wars that are beneficial to the country we're defending, but it hurts our troops. And in the end the country we were defending hates us. I can't agree more with what Washington said for isolationism. Our soldiers should be defending our soil, not on foreign soil.

-We are always in disagreement within the government. The branches, the political parties, and people who want to further their own interests. It's countries like Sweden or Japan that have governments that selflessly try to act for the common good instead of their own factions.

-We pretty much failed at what the founding fathers wanted to achieve. A government that goes for the liberty and happiness of its citizens without exploiting holes in the governing system. So that factions would not overpower one small group, but have everyone benefit.

The government is corrupt in its own way, even communism would be so perfect if the Premier was a good guy.

I just wish all those pencil pushers up in the big house would finally realize what they're doing is wrong. So that they'd finally come to their senses and run the government how it should be, properly. But then we have some 'normal' people to blame for being so stubborn.

Okay that may have prevented school shootings but from the people I've talked to in the UK and from news reports I've seen handgun crime actually went up after handguns were banned.

Here in Canada,  we allow citizens to own Rifles and Shotguns and we don't have any problems with school shootings over here.
