I don't think I have ever fully understood the whole "waifu" thing. I wouldn't be surprised if it was started by the otaku crowd, since it sounds like "wife" would be pronounced in katakana, assuming Japan appropriates the use of the English word. In this particular context, it's obviously used to describe fictional crushes. I've never taken fondness in fictional media that far, but I guess far from me to judge others for their way of showing enthusiasm for it.
