Rambling On About The Term "Weird"

So! As you all know, to most of general society, bronies are weird as all hell! Though one question surges through my brain as I type. What makes us weird? A simple question to answer, right? That may be true, but there's another thing I've realized that kind of goes along with this little rant I'm currently conducting. What makes us normal? Answer: NOTHING! Normality is a concept, not an attribute! So what makes bronies stand out in this weird cycle? Answer: I have no clue.

Society deems cartoon ponies are something exclusively for little girls so bronies are weird for simply liking something which they are "supposed to" have no interest in. There really is no such thing as normal when you really get down to it but when people challenge certain social norms people can sometimes react with hostility.

Well, I don't like using the term "weird" in some cases. I like using the term "different" instead. We're all different, not just bronies. Anti bronies think bronies are weird, but they're the ones who are weird. Actually, we're all weird.

 

What I like about bronies is that we all have something different and unique about each of us. We all have different talents, lifestyles, etc. like you said, normality is a concept, not an attribute.

Exactly, even the most tolerant and enlightened person has been bigoted and closed minded in at least one or two instances, it is a thought that while it is unfortunate is something that can be worked on. I do believe that human beings as a species can evolve to be more open minded and less bigoted and much of it has to do with education. Jim Crow laws and slavery used to be things  that were considered perfectly acceptable but now most people are horrified a those things.

Despite what term you use, you'll always notice that their both synonyms and your still saying the same thing. And everyone has something diverse about them. Without Diversity, we would have sameness, and without sameness, diversity would be as much as a concept as normality is. Our minds are like two-way doors, they can swing both ways. On one hand, you could be completely open minded about something and accept it, but on another, you could be completely close minded due to the abstract idea that had been thrust into your head. You fear it, therefore, you snarl and bark, and bite at it in hopes it goes away. Anti-bronies do these things because in their mind, it's deemed their fear, and they retaliate the wrong way.

Aye, some do find the term offensive, but when you think about it, is it really offensive? Also, most never do, and they look at anti-bronies like a plague, but we're just looking through a mirror full of antonyms. At this point though, we've sadly gone past the point of reason. Sure we can convert some to our side, but in the end, it's best just to ignore it, like what your teachers said in elementary/junior high/high school... but I don't think getting an adult will help with this one.

We're all hypocritical in a sense. Most tend to hate anti-bronies for hating when we turn around and do the same thing they did.

        People tend to accept behavior which is usual as that which is normal.  In this case, the usual, and therefore, normal demographic for the audience of a cartoon show such as this would be very young girls.  Even the creators of the show did not expect it to be so popular amongst people of such a wide age range, and especially not amongst the male population.  Since this deviates from what was expected, it's identified as weird.

 

        One thing to take away from this, though, is that the longer the brony community exists, the more usual and less weird it becomes, and the less negative the responses to the community become.  There are plenty of examples in history of behavior which was widely considered weird (or even unacceptable) which gradually gained acceptance.  Also, my personal opinion is that people who are more exposed to unusual behavior are more able to accept it for what it is, although the role a person plays in a particular social structure also influences how they'll react.

I have no clue. There's no clear cut definition of normality, fyi; what most people think about when they think of the word "normal" is "average" or, NOT -"unique".

 

Therefore, if you pick apart all the traits humans have, and set them on a numerical scale, you'll find that almost everyone out there are weird in one category or more. In fact, being the most normal person with just about all the average human traits possible with nothing special about them is astronomically not probable.

 

Everyone's weird. Bronies are just a better target for some people.
