Open the file Video Cards.sgr in Notepad, this file is located in

 

<install path>\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\Game\Bin

 

where <install path> is where your copy of Sims 3 installed (depending on whether it came from Steam, Origin, disc, etc)

 

Add the line

 

card 0x6811 "AMD Radeon R9 200 Series"

 

to the file and save it.

 

I looked it up on my computer and it's actually 0x6810?

 

Either way, I pasted it with 6810 and did absolutely nothing. Also, I could not find the ScreenModeResolution module. It does not exist in my graphicsrules.sgr file.

 

EDIT: I used the method described by the OP in that topic's first post and got it read in the file. However, the graphics settings still default at low, there are subtle wavy lines on my game window some of the time, and the lag is still bad.

 

I'm so mad right now I might just end up sending this stupid computer back. What a waste of my money, time, and effort. This computer was supposed to be able to run the game almost perfectly (as perfectly as possible with The Sims 3, I mean), but instead the graphics card isn't supported and the lag makes the game even less playable than on my old unsupported PC.

So guys, I'm doing something so incredibly hilarious that it's borderline stupid, yet a bit cheap. I have an old 2005-esque gaming machine, I'm sure I've mentioned that before in this thread. The one with the Athlon 64 3800+ Venice CPU? Well, I was doing some research about it, and decided to build a budget 2006ish upgrade to it just to see how it would perform. I was doing some research yesterday about the types of CPUs that were made for the pre-AM2 (939) socket AMD mobos, and found out about the Athlon 64 X2 4800+ Toledo dual core.

 

...and then I found one on eBay for $60.

 

BASICALLY, I've decided to revamp my build a bit, throw it into my brother's old EVGA 133-K8-NF41 mobo with 4GB RAM and a GTX 570 that my friend gave me, and see what it can do. Seeing as how the Venice was running 100% any given time, I figure that this Toledo will do...something. My brother thinks it'll run what I want for the time being, until I get the money for my new laptop and better desktop. A partial upgrade, I'm looking forward to it.

 

...there's also the fact that my 500w PSU wasn't going to handle my GTX 570, so I ended up buying my XFX PRO1050W Black Edition 1050w early. Pics forthcoming, probably in a week or so. I need to determine if there's something wrong with me for defaulting to a 939 build instead of an i7 or an FX for a budget, slightly behind the present gaming build. @_@

Sorry to hear you're still having problems. Are you getting wavy lines on the desktop or other apps as well? If so, the GPU or some other component could be bad, or there might be interference on the cable. Difficult to troubleshoot over a forum.

 

You could give the company you bought it from a call and see what they have to say, but it seems like you're set on returning it. Your call.

I doubt that'll be the last I see of the lag, but maybe it has to do with the poor programming of the game and hopefully resetting the town through Overwatch can fix it each time.

You sure you don't want to just pick up a 20th anniv. Pentium dual-core for $10 more and a cheap board? It'll take you a lot further than the X2.

More than likely. You might want to contact EA and see if they have a less hacky method of getting your newer card to work with it. I doubt it, but worth a shot I guess?

What's hooked up to that thing? My build checked out at well under 300W and I picked an FX-8320 and GTX-750ti FTW(and another of my online friends has an over-clocked i7 and pretty decent GPU on a 500W)

I BELIEVE the last I checked, the GTX 570 is about 500W itself, from the Nvidia forums. Not sure about my specific model; my friend handed me this 1280MB Galaxy GeForce GTX 570 and I threw it in the old build, hoping it would do something for me. Sadly, it did not, and it was probably because of a combination of that incredibly old single core Athlon and the cheap 500w PSU that came with my case. This is all going in an Aspire X-Superalien, btw. Freaking love this case.

Just looked it up, and WOW is that inefficient, the card I picked pulls like 55W and has three times the clock speed with twice the vram.

Actually, Envy, could you grab the Kerbal Space Program demo off of Steam and set it to your monitor's native resolution (I'd assume 1920x1080) real quick? Because if it lags too, then that probably means that the Intel GPU is being used rather than the Gigabyte one.

I went from AMD to Intel without reinstalling Windows. I was convinced there was no way it'd work, but it started, found all the drivers and downloaded them then restarted and... it worked.

KSP is almost all CPU, though...

Game lags like shit if I run it on my integrated graphics. I have to run it on my GTX 675M if I want a decent frame rate. For reference, I have an i7-3630QM @ 2.4GHz.

Should be fine, the FX-8320 is pretty powerful (especially when it comes to multi-core performance.)
