Anyone know any tricks to Jerry-rig a full-size DVD/CD drive bay to fit something like a floppy-drive? My card-reader is that size but there's only full-sized ports on my PC. I tought of putting black-cardboard around it or something. 

 No idea, I don't think that you can even connect a floppy drive to a modern motherboard except through USB.

Out of curiosity, how many of you have built your own computers for gaming? and do you have any advice for someone hoping to do the same at some point in the future?

I found it and to paraphase the list: "a shitload".

 

It supports like six additional ports of each type(three of each in the middle of the board, and three more of each by back ports). The thing also has like six SATA ports and a power port for the CPU if you want to OC it. 

 

I'm kinda not regretting buying the most expensive variant of the board now. 

 

It also came with two SATA cables and I bought three, so I should be good on wiring now.

Otherwise, maybe foam or cardboard? It won't look pretty, and depending on where the bay is, could be tricky. Thread some rubber bands through the holes on the side and suspend it that way?

As someone who is still in the process of buying all the parts for a gaming PC, here's some advice I can give you:

 

1. Do your research! It only takes 30 minutes to an hour on average, and can help you get the most bang for your buck out of your budget.
2. Make sure you have the money to commit to a budget, and don't go over that budget limit. For example, if you can only commit $650 to a PC, don't try to aim for a $1000+ PC.
3. Linus (LinusTechTips), Jay (JayzTwoCents) and Dmitry (HardwareCanucks) are your new best friends. I typically rely on Linus and Jay for hardware and peripheral reviews and performance numbers, and Dmitry for cases. Works very well and helps me make more informed buying decisions when looking at hardware. Of course, these aren't your only choices - HiTechLegion, Tek Syndicate (although this is more just general tech news with some hardware reviews and performance numbers here and there) and many others are good choices too!
4. PCPartPicker is also your new best friend. Price tracking, compatibility tracking, lets you save and share parts lists and just generally makes things so much easier.

Heh, it took me four years before I managed to get the money and knowledge to start this PC project, it's taken all year now because of money but it'll be worth it in the end.

Well then again I think I'll end up taking longer as I plan on starting this after finding a steady job (after graduating college that is.) after all my current system is adequate, though has it's fair share of problems and limitations (one of which being it's spotty wireless due to an adapter that tends to throw temper tantrums.) However I like to think that it'll last a while.

I was a console gamer for most of my life, hampered my ability to figure out a good gaming PC for a while. That, and money.

heh I've always been a mix, even before elementary school I had games for both pc and consoles, however as I was a second child almost everything I played with was borrowed or hand-me-downs (save for handheld consoles) so I've grown more comfortable with the software side of things than the hardware.

To be honest, I became a PC gamer because I feel really, really passionate about these games and the PC keeps them alive much longer than consoles do. That, and I've always been a technologically-inclined person.

In recent years I've actually drifted more towards pc for much of the same reason, I'm the type of person who loves a game that grows with it's players and have dreamed of creating a game entirely dependent on the choices of the player in one way or another, what better place for that than on the pc?

Indeed! It's why a lot of older games are still for sale on Steam, because a lot of those games are still alive. Namely, Morrowind.

Not a floppy, a card-reader(that hooks up via a USB connector) that's the same size as one.

Hey guy's i've been thinking of switching from my 4x8gb Sticks of DDR3 1333 RAM and changing to 4X6GB of DDR3 1600-1866 Geil Dragon RAM (if i can get it there) i heard higher RAM speed helps with stuff like photoshop or video editing and that :3. since i want to put the RAM in my machine into a friends machine uwu.

 

Plus when that's done has anyone had experience of crossfiring a 7970 with a 7950, i want to do that but my 7970GHZ is the 6gb edition and my 7950 is just the 7950, but both are sapphire. I do like pretty really good FPS but i admire visuals more so @u@

It's pretty fun and you can pretty much run it on a Potato at this point.

If you use torrents, cheack Piratebay and you should be able to find one with GZDoom and the WADs for all three games.

Reporting from my new computer, still ironing the kinks out but all seems to be running smooth aside from

 

a CPU fan-error that seems to be pointless because the fan is working

 You need to format the drive before it can be used. You do that in Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Storage > Disk Management.
