technology The Glorious PC master race thread

Leave it alone. As Linus said in the video, have a backup plan because you probably won't be able to use your PC for an entire day or so.

Can you link me to this video please?

So, for my next card, R9 290x, or 970?

290X will do slightly better at high resolutions (1440p+) with higher power consumption and heat, so buy one with a good cooler.

970 will do better at 1080p while consuming much less power/run cooler. Also that whole 3.5 GB debacle.

It depends. If having black screen crashes every 30 minutes is your kind of thing, go 290x. If you like being able to use your PC without restarting for 30 minutes at a time, 970.

I've never heard of this issue outside of manufacturer specific cards.

Honestly I'd actually go with the r9 290, it offers very close performance to the 290x and GTX 970 while being about $50 cheaper. It's only a 2-5 FPS difference most of the time, and with an overclocked version (still cheaper than the 290x) it should have identical performance.

I actually bought an R9 290 (couldn't pass up the price) a while back, but replaced it with a 970 as I could never get display on more than two monitors regardless of what driver set I used. It was absolutely mystifying. Couldn't turn up much in a search other than the fact that it was happening to other 290 owners with all kinds of different configs. At that point I was just impatient and the 970 was the new hotness so I just went for that.

I've had better luck with NVIDIA drivers, but that's just my personal experience. The 290s are great deal at this point in time, though.

Aint this a beauty?

I like how in the description for this one it says "Well I got tired of waiting/lost faith in product, traded the card in for GT 780Ti. No more blackscreens.". This describes my experience with radeon quite well, except for 780ti being a 760.

Maybe that's just bad luck. I've had my r9 270x and it's run fine. It's an XFX, I wouldn't just generalize all radeon cards to do that. Also, if you read the desription of the first video, he said

I now own a msi gaming 290X with custom cooler and different VRAM and it's worked fine for months now.!

Honestly I'd take a small chance that the card will have problems that can be fixed by a replacement over buying from a company that lies about their GPU specs.

Honestly. I think some people just have it out for AMD. Their CPUs leave a lot to be desired, but their GPUs are really good.

I'm gonna go with the Gtx 970. It's a tad cheaper, but the only bad thing I've heard about them is the "VRAM controversy". And when the 1100 series comes out, I might get one of those. They aren't coming out til 2016, so I'll have other parts I can upgrade first(RAM, SSD, HDD, Maybe an enclosed water cooler.) And in a few years, I might upgrade to an i7. That won't be for awhile, though.

I'm of the opinion that their hardware is sound, but the software left something to be desired. The 7000 Series was excellent but it took several driver sets before most of the issues were ironed out, months after the cards dropped.

That's what I've heard. They don't have the best drivers. Maybe the guys in the video had a driver failure. I've had my 270x for a month and it's been running great. I'll probably give it to my brother when I upgrade.

Really? Because I had 2 270x's and they both did that exact same thing!

Tell that to my 270x

So you had some bad luck with a couple Radeon cards, they aren't all gonna be like that. Radeon isn't filled with GPUs that black screen, have driver errors, and the like, you need to stop thinking that. Gtx isn't some almighty company that makes flawless cards. One of my buddies has had poor experience with nvidia cards, they've either done the same thing, or just died, or burnt out. For instance, he had a 780ti that burnt on him. Both companies can have problems like that, it all depends on the manufacture, and if it's a reference card, those aren't best for builds, because they have stock coolers, and not enough airflow, as a result, might not last long.

But you haven't used an Nvidia card before you had an AMD card, right?
