movies/tv Is Gotham going too far?

Gotham has recently announced their additions of Scarecrow and Harvey Dent for the show in the near future.

Now, if you know Batman mythology, you'll realize that most villians (except Cobblepot) don't appear until after Batman begins his Caped Crusader career.

Batman is supposed to leave, train, then return to Gotham, fight the mob, and then these villians begin their rise to power. I understood Catwoman (cat "WOMAN") being a teenager at this time, but now it''s getting ridiculous. I know it's not necessarily canon, but I can't be the only one bothered, right?

I just wish it would be true to the comics.

In my case I'm more puzzled by the ages of these characters. They're all being portrayed as being older than Bruce Wayne, and while that's going to be true in some cases, there are some weird stand-outs that are niggling at me. Like Montoya being the same age as Gordon. That's... odd. But in any case, I agree with you that this can go so very strange so very fast.

This is the problem with a prequel series. A mini-series is fine, because you'll have plotted out the entire thing and already know what you're doing when you start. With a series, however, all you're going to have is a rough plan for one season and the first couple of episodes plotted out before you've committed to the project. Then you're scrambling trying to fill the season, and worse yet season 2, without doing anything that would wreck the main story that you're not allowed to touch. Eventually you're going to throw up your hands and go the Enterprise route with temporal anomalies and the like in weak attempts to let you do whatever you want with the idea that you've got an 'out of continuity free' card to pull at the end of the series.

Plus given that DC has multiple other live-action TV series going on right now, the temptation to crossover is going to be *strong* in order to pull in audience who have gotten used to Marvel Movie continuity. They've already put Flash and Arrow into the same continuity, so I be there are studio executives slavering at the door trying to get a Gotham tie-in of some kind going. *shudder*

Here's to hoping they DON'T try doing that, because it would be so incorrect in time with Arrow and The Flash taking place in current day (2014), and Gotham being pretty far back in time since everyone has old style vehicles and flip phones. It'd be utterly ridiculous to tie-in with those two but I'd have called it.

I'm not hardcore enough to know that about the other villains, but I find Gotham interesting overall. Even if it's not canon, it's fairly entertaining to see all the young villains growing into who they are. We already KNOW about Batman growing into who he is, after all. :muffins:
