Increase the limits for gifs

I always had a problem with uploading gifs on the forums, usually ending up either not uploading it at all or degrading it far too much to be viewable, hence I suggest increasing the limits for gifs to what I would suggest 1 mb. This could allow users to upload more creative profile pictures and if lag becomes a problem that it could be possible to turn them into .webms to help with this.

1MB seems a bit high and far exceeds what one sees on even generous (and successful) message boards. Steam allows 200kb and I've seen 250kb, but not sure I've seen 1MB. IIRC the default is 50k on IPB boards.

 

What would be the increased limit for donors? 2MB?

 

Also, would this impact our non US and mobile user friends. Perhaps we need to implement a 'hide avatar feature' that would make the site more forgiving for them in that situation?

I removed the poll. Personally I'm not a fan of polls related to technical implementations. For one, you already had people voting but not elaborating beyond a two mouse clicks, and we on the tech team and staff have no idea why other than a 'NO'. Secondly, changes to UX need to be done by those that are experienced with web development.

 

If everyone voted for a bad idea, it doesn't make it a good one.
