Maybe somebody has already brought this up, but obviously Earth Pony/Pegusus/Unicorn+Same=Same. However Unicorn+Pegasus doesn't equal Alicorn. I don't know, I am so confused.

This. The cakes' twins are a pegasi and a unicorn, even though their parents are both earth ponies. It seems to just be a biological coin toss.
