The captain lead his compatriot through the first the poor district where all the poor ponies backed away upon seeing the army captain. All averted their eyes and parted from their path. The poor district opened up to the high class where the rich unicorns in fancy garb walked to and fro discussing various things. Most saw the group and politely stepped out of the way. 

 

The captain walked closer to his escort and whispered, "I don't like these high class ponies too much. They always give me the look of that they are superior to me. That's how unicorns are around here, they tend to be the leaders and the earth ponies the lead..."

The carriage drove through the busy streets. Carriages and horse-drawn trams were everywhere. The sky was filled with smoke from the giant factory sector, as the wind was blowing over the city. Soldier squads of 20men patroled the streets while policemen regulated everything else. The building were crowded together yet colurful, and the closer they got to the town center they became larger an richer. The carriage eventually stopped in front of the govermental building (look for people's palace, romania... Something like that). To say for short, it was huge.

(Wait, did they already land the airship!?)

 

 

"Then: It may be best in that case, that some of our earth ponies will go to Medeis... But I am not the one who would "force" them to go. Malachi smiled again. "Ma will be glad to hear that." He said to the king before looking back at Magnum. "And my bat is pretty much a weapon. Before I became Don I was a Capo and I ran a small crew. And I use to carry around my bat where ever I went. Didn't like getting my hooves bloody." He smirked. "Plus, it use to belong to my old man before he gave it to me. So it's a weapon and a bit of a sentimental item. Now it's just habit for me to take it with me."

The duke noticed the weakened stance the mare was in. This was now obvious on the rest of the group, nomatter how hard they tried to conceal it. The desperation should soon take over, meaning that he could finally touch theyre subconcious being.

"Forgive me, i dont mean to offend, but that seems so uncivilized and mannerless. I mean the weapon of a gentleman mist be a carefully crafted sabre, or in the worst case, a pistol. A gentle sword would surely pass on the elegance and grace a pony in a high position must project."

"Yeah, but the streets are uncivilized. When you see a sward they guy you try to scare just looks at ya funny. Cause they never really felt what it was like to be cut by one. But when you show them a steel bat, then they start shaking in their horseshoes. Cause everyone just knows what it's like to get hit with a bat. Plus it good when you wanna rough someone up but not kill them."

@Gloomfury, @Lordav, The Kaiser raised an eyebrow. "Let me get this straight. The lesser members of your society don't know what it's like to be cut is what you're saying. None of your criminals roam the streets with knives concealed on their side? Not that ours do this. If a pony in Abendstern were caught armed at all during something like a robbery they would be charged with attemped murder of the second degree, which is punished by death. The nice thing about Abendstern's laws is that they have resulted in most of the crimes committed not being severe or done by degenerates due to strict enforcement of them. But back to my point. A sword brings with it a formality and practicality that a bat, although having its uses, can't. With a sword you can convince somepony with a minor cut, or slay them on the spot. A bat restricts you to a beating. If you want to force somepony in to do a job, wouldn't it be better to leave them needing a few stitches rather than a brace?"

"Not really. Sure we have crime, but not a lot of it.  Usually just a thief here and there. And we do have gangs who get into a brawls sometimes. But we don't mind as long as there's no killing or attempt to kill. And what are you more likely to remember someone. when they cut you with a sward or beat you with a bat? Plus I know how to hold back that it just leaves a bruise. 

 

You could say I'm a master with a bat." He chuckled. "Also broken bones hurt more then cuts." He said before going back to eating.

The pen might be mightier than the sword, but the guy on the other end is your canvas. In Abendstern we put criminals to death or to work with very few exceptions. We make sure that whatever damage they have done is made up for. How could he do that now if he can barely carry himself?" he ate more before continuing. "Now if I lived in a society such as yours, and for whatever reason I were assaulted with a bat, and at the very least not left for dead, I would get a bat of my own oncecI had recovered, and drive a couple of nails into it to draw an emphasis on who not to beat with a bat, along with blood."

"That is not enough, if a order would be to attack and slaughter a village of mares and fillies, or to execute your cllosest friend, you would still question orders, thats what were going to rid you off, the questioning if its right or wrong. A soldier will always follow orders, even if these are to get himself killed."

"Our streets are all clean, all that is left is for the criminals in the rural areas to be exter... pacified. Why charge them, just execute them on the spot. But criminals that show great skill... Can be useful if they are... Persuaded. Also, a sword gives a better lesson, like an arm off. Also, it is a lot easier to use, why waste two hoofs on a bat with repetitive hits when you can use one hoof and finish him in one swoop."

Lixus was panting hard, the sun glaring on her "S-sir I-" she was unable to finish her statement as thirst and hunger and heat exhaustion got to her and she collapsed unconscious, the rest of the squad saw this and moved towards her, a few more fell unconscious on the way to her, a few used what strength they had left to fan her, Rex looked at her and glared up at the duke, before helping the others to drag her to the open tent

meanwhile at the treasure fleet the abenstanian crew was allowed to walk all over the floating palace to enjoy the entertainment while the queen talked with the captain "So tell me about the leader of your nation, i would like to know about them"

The duke looked at them as they did theyre best, it was now time to wait for all of them to collapse, then, 1 by one, he would phsyhically torture theyre minds into submission. As soon as one of them would show signs of waking up, he would be dragged to a closed tent. There, soldiers would drink water, eat while the duke disciplined him. Water would be poured on the ground in feomt of him/her as the weak trainee would be repeated, "you are nothing but a tool, you live to serve your commader." They would be whipped or hit, which for a weakened pony would be a lot more devastating. Eventually the pony would give up and the message would unwillingly spur into their mind. He would then be conforted and fed, making the subconcious sure that giving in was the right decision. The pony would act normally until the duke orders somethig, then the subconcious would override the concious of the pony making him follow orders immidiately, without questioning. They would be mindless killing machines until they would be given free time. Then the pony would return to normal, with a pretty vague memory of what he had done. This was harsh pshycology, if failed, the process would repeat as no body could resist the treatment more than 4 times, it would have to give in. The fact that most of these trainees were teens qould make their phsyhic a lot weaker and easier to manipulate.

This treatment went on for 2 days, on the night of the 5th day, the soldiers were awoken by the sounds of chaos, a manticore had stumbled upon the camp and started killing and eating horses, the trainees were awoken as well they were stunned to see the ferocious beast, a few grabbed whatever weapons were nearby in case it came for them

After the first horse was eaten the manticore started charging for the trainee camps. One of the guards saw this, he took his rifle and fired randmly to attract the attention of the beast from the trainees, the manticore attacked him and used his stinger to stab him in the leg.

"Fritz!"

One of the guards yelled. They got on the second group of horses that were tied away from the manticore and started circling the beast. About 10 soldiers were in this action. The manticore would be confused on who to attack, while the dragoon guards used theyre swords to keep him at the distance, one of them aimed his rifle at the beasts head, it was a clean shot. The bullet ripped through te beasts skull, it fell dead. Another shot was fired just to make sure. The soldiers dragged the wounded one in a tent and layed him on a plank.

"Its poisoned!" One said

"Ive read some Cidoian books, they have no remedy!" Another exclaimed

"We dont have enough time to come up with a cure!" The medic of the group shouted.

 

The duke place his sword in the fire, looked at two of the standing guards and nodded. The two grabbed his arms and forced the wounded stretched on the table. Another two grabbed his legs. The wounded soldier, Fritz started yelling,

"No sir! Please! I dont want to lose my leg! Plea..." They placed a wooden stick in his mouth. As the guard tried to wiggle out of the grip. Another guard drew his sabre and slashed. The leg went clean off, cutting the femural bone in half. The guard tried to scream but the stick in his mouth stopped him from doing so. Blood was gushing out of the wound, the duke came in with his sword, it was glowing orange from heat. He pressed it on the guards cut and again he tried to scream in pain. When they removed the stick , which was meant to stop him from destroying his teeth, yells of pain were heard from the tent. The wound was sealed and bandaged. The guard would be crippled, now having a improvised wooden leg stuck to the chunk he had. He walked unsecury and looked at the trainees as he walked by. These were the ponies he had sacrificed his leg to save. He sat down by the ditch, throwing a rock in the manticores corpse, which was moved out of camp. His career as a soldier was surely done.

After about an hour heavy footsteps were heard, another nearby manticore had heard the commotion and showed up at the camp to investigate, upon seeing the corpse it roared, Lixus who was near by grabbed the closest weapon to her, which was a rifle, she aimed the rifle and shot its stinger, rendering it ineffective, she then used the weapon as a spear, she didnt have her cidonian armor on, so one swipe would certainly kill her, using her rifle like a spear she dodged and weaved its attacks stabbing it constantly, weakening it, the battle was drawing in on lookers, soldiers and trainees watched as she took it on, one soldier raised his rifle before being stopped by a trainee, "stop, she needs to do this"  

 

The manticore was getting weaker with each stab until it collapsed of blood loss, with a final stab she stabbed it through the throat, killing it, she then looked at the corpse for a few seconds and then took the bayonett off, then cut open the manticore sticking her head in it, she then pulled her head out, holding its heart in her mouth

 

A trainee spoke to the ponissians and the duke "I should explain, when a Cidonian kills its first manticore, they must eat its heart to claim total victory and to be considered a true warrior, she felt like she had to do this to make up for the dishonor and weakness she showed by collapsing in front of the commander the other day, her not doing this would also bring much shame to her and her family, once she eats it the second part of the test is she must hold her stomach from the sickness from eating meat"

 

Lixus bit down and chewed the heart, swallowing it, she panted hard, still going through an adrenaline rush, she looked almost in a trance state, before she started coughing up manticore blood, she did everything she could to focus on not vomiting, meanwhile while the rest of her squad wildly cheered

The soldiers watched, pretty disgusted, The duke tirned to a soldier to his right,

"So barbaric." He whispered. The crippled soldier walked by, looking at the second dead maticore. He then silently moved on to his tent to sit down, watching the crowd. He was still in pain and traumatized by the fact that he had lost his leg. The soldiers then used their horses to pull the body of the manticore by the other one. Ponssian soldiers were taught to be able to eat meat if needed, but raw, that was different. They cut of a large piece of meat and put it over the fire to cook. They were a bit bored of the army rations they brought.

"Alright you lot, i didnt say you could take a break, back to work!" The duke ordered the trainees.

The trainees went back to what they were doing, Lixus was still feeling incredibly sick, but was satisfied and felt good about herself, it wasnt often that a trainee killed a manticore, she was also happy that there was only 2 days left, with this accomplishment, she felt like she could make lieutenant in no time at all, a pony stopped by the pony who lost his leg, however he recognized him as the pony who gave him horse urine to drink days earlier, he looked at his lost leg "Do you need help getting to your tent?"

"No, i am fine." The soldier wobbled with his wooden peg but regained his balance, he slowly made it to a create where he sat down. He took out a harmonica and played to himself. The manticore meat was cooked and 5 guards served themselves, it was good to eat something different in 5 days. Any unconcious trainee was still sent to the closed tent where the phsycology method was used. It would take about 1 more day for at least 9 of the ponies to be "broken"

In order to integrate the Cidonian population, especially the earth ponies in the farms, the goverment passed te act of the creation of the "Royal Cidonian Regiment". Officers were sent to farms to give out leaflets that romanticised the honor and glory of being in a regiment. They also offered a big sum of money to the families of those who agreed. "This would be a chance to show these pegasi that you, earth ponies, can be better then them, and fight for what is right!" They were told.
