gaming Naughty Dog not making cartoony platformers.

When asked if the team misses the cartoonish styling of their Crash and Jak era, Josh had to say this on the matter:

"No, I don't, because we've got an amazing team of people making some really expressive performances with our current stable of realistic characters. I mean, animating the stylised stuff is a lot of fun, but the stories that we're trying to tell right now are a little bit more grounded and a little bit more grown up than they were back in the Jak and Daxter days." — Josh Sherr

And when he was asked if this is because of the members of Naughty Dog simply getting older, Josh said this:

"I think that's part of it. I think that it's also dictated by what the market wants, too. You know, that was a lot of what our decision was bounded by and based on when moving from Jak and Daxter to something more like Uncharted. And it's also what we're interested in, too."
— Josh Sherr

Naughty Dog has a point. People grew up with Crash and Jak, and as fans grow older they want to see more beyond the cutesy cartoon designs. I may love cartoons over realism, but if they were to move back to Jak-esque characters, they'll probably lose a fair amount of their fans. Not to mention that because of the success of The Last Of Us, Naughty Dog has a better idea on what their fans want.

Crash may be one of the biggest parts of my childhood, but honestly, his games aren't all that good compared to what Naughty Dog is making at the moment. Sometimes you gotta put things in your childhood away, as much as it may hurt to you.

I really don't think you can say Crash isn't as good as what Naughty Dog is making now. They're so completely different. It'd be cool for them to offer some variety instead of just sticking with one thing just because that's what's succesful for them at the time.

Although crash bash is one of my favourite games and I don't play any newer naughty dog games I understand why they made a change in the type of games they are putting out now. Im fine with them not putting out any cartoony games anymore because they made enough great games in the old times. Uncharted is a popular game so they are doing it right now anyway!

I remember Jak and Daxter...I really miss those games, some of my favorites on the PS2. Crash was pretty cool too, but I never liked him quite as much, and I really didn't care too much about Uncharted when I played it, not that I thought it was bad, it just didn't really grip me. Maybe I should give it another shot.

I honestly think cartoon graphics in games tend to look better though. Sure, realistic environments can be really cool too, but I'd much rather have a world that looks different than our own. The Jak games had a pretty good story too in my opinion.

Twilight is best pony.

Why hello MLPForums! What have ya been up to?

I saw this a couple of days ago and I'm very sad and disappointed. It sounds to me that they think that the market only wants realistic and mature kind of games nowadays which isn't exactly true, LittleBigPlanet, Ratchet and clank, Mario, Sly Cooper and more all show that there's still a market for these games and it seems as if they're a little arrogant as if they're saying they've matured and only want to make realistic games with grounded stories like Uncharted and The Last of Us and that Crash Bandicoot/Jak and Daxter isn't good enough for them anymore even though Jak had a fairly deep and mature story. They feel that Crash Bandicoot and Jak and daxter isn't mature and/or realistic enough to make it anymore, it's a real shame considering how much money and popular Naughty dog is you would have thought that they could make a smaller team that could make a new Crash Bandicoot/Jak and Daxter title. There are plenty of fans myself included who grew up with Crash and Jak and really would want to see them make it to the next generation in HD. I personally have wanted and waited on a new Jak or Crash for a very long time. I don't understand why they would want to keep the franchises if they don't want to return to them either. I know now that a new Crash or Jak won't ever come from them in the future, this is really saddening. I'm reluctant on getting Uncharted 4 now after hearing this :(

Hmm, you're right. Now that I'm thinking about it, it makes me kind of think that they should consider all audiences rather their long-time fans. It's nice to see them pay homage to their long time/adult fans and all, but really, what kind of games would they make for their current audience beyond the whole first-person shooter shtick? Not saying that's what they're all about now, but it'll be interesting to see what games they'll make next.

Well I guess I understand them wanting to break away from their cartoony roots. At least the new stuff they're making is still great. (haven't played any, but I've heard good things and they do look fun)

but would it kill them to give Crash at least one last hurrah?  :(

Sadly, Crash is now owned by Vivendi Universal which is a studio owned by *sigh*...Activision. Unless they give it up, I don't think we will ever see a great return to form for Crash, same with Spyro which is also owned by the same company I believe.

I have no problem with ND not wanting to do a new Crash game, Uncharted 2 is easily one of my favorite and most cherished gaming experiences ever. However, I do think that ND should maybe consider experimenting a little at times, maybe make something that is far less serious in tone, like Crash but not specifically Crash. I feel like the AAA developers are drifting completely away from cartoony style games which is a shame. Given the talent these guys have it would be fun to see what they could do with a concept like that.

I'm glad they grew out of those stylized games. Naughty Dog became one of my favorite studios simply because of the Uncharted series.

Yes, it would be good if they did something different other than realistic games like Uncharted and The Last of Us. I did like Uncharted just not as much as Crash Bandicoot and Jak and Daxter, not everything has to be mature and realistic to be successful. I was thinking of something similar to Crash and Jak like a fantasy game.
