So the G1 special in San Fransisco happened, NJPW's largest US show from the legendary cow palace arena. Despite the initial low ticket sales, looks like they managed to break new records in terms of attendance and sales.

But it also looks like they repeated the same mistakes as last year:

-JR and Barnett are sup par compared to the knowledge and chemistry of Kelly and Calis. They also kept trying to talk over the ring announcers. WWE isn't even that naive. It doesn't even seem like anyone briefed them on the ongoing feuds and even the finishing moves.

-Production was sketchy. Again. This crew was not on par with even ROH, let alone the standard we expect from New Japan. Too many crowd shots. Lighting was dim. Lazy stage design and set up. Shots weren't quite at the right angle. Crowd was poorly miked in some places, miked too close at others.

-Oh my Luna. The guard rails. Nobody secured the guard rails. Again. It was bad. Heavy steel barricades were sent toppling after every Irish whip. Someone could've gotten seriously hurt. It fell on poor Abe san's knee. Dude took a beating that night.

Heck, a guardrail was sent flying back so hard, it actually caused a shower of sparks against the arena floor.

Spoiler

Heck, it even fell into the announce team.

Spoiler

image.thumb.png.da8c810d4c177155054fab3a26f0141b.png

That half hatch suplex into the guard rail was planned. The rail slamming back into the announcers table,  JR falling out of his chair and getting hurt,  Josh Barnett going "Wow. You've done f:mellow:ked up now." into a live mic and then storm the match to get into Jay White's face, was certainly not. Thankfully both Jay and Juice apologized after the show. But that should not have happened. Imagine if those were fans instead. NJPW could get banned from the venue. At least.

-While not a production issue, it is one of questionable planning. New Japan will be returning stateside. That's good right? It would be, if it wasn't on Sept. 30th. Les than 3 months away, and on the same month as sort of New Japan show All In. Yes, it's being held in the more manageable Walter Pavilion again. But NJPW doesn't seem to get that most of their live US fans are the traveling sort. It's not feasible for them to arrange expensive travel that frequently.

*exhales* Whew, with that out of the way, onto the good stuff.

Spoiler
  • Tag matches were filler. Nothing much of note. Well, except for the return of King Haku, the baddest wrestler on the planet, tagging with his boys. No one on the Chaos side stood a chance. Also, clever roll up sequence during the Ishii/Yano vs. Suzuki/ZSJ match.
  • Lot of praise for Goto/Cobb, but it didn't quite click with me.
  • Hiromu/Dragon Lee should've been good. But I feel like I've seen the match a whole bunch of times already, so nothing really wowed me here. Except for the fact that Hiromu was hit with a phoenix-plex (bridging backwards powerbomb) and landed on his head. Doctors confirm a broken neck. But incredibly enough, he managed to finish the match.
  • Things really picked up with the Tag title match and final two matches. TYB vs. LIJ was better than their Dominion bout, showing the bucks on more equal footing with their challengers. Also during the LIJ entrance, I saw the dude from the Rasslin' Rantin' channel get his close up, whom you all should go pay a visit.
    Spoiler

White/Juice brought the intensity. Bright futures for both guys. And congrats to the Flamboyant one for finally being the first american to hold the IWGP US title. Amazing that it only took three people to do it.
  • Of course, Kenny and Cody had to try and up it, turning the damn thing into a TLC match. Much better than their ROH encounter. Though there was a scary spot where Kenny tried to powerbomb Cody through a table on the outside, only to hit the table and have the whole thing fall over instead. I thought Japan was the only place with gimmicked tables? And yet after all was said and done, not only did Kenny achieve his first defense, he even forgave Cody.
  • But the real big news, was the inevitable Bullet Club implosion. But not the way anyone predicted. It wasn't Team COdy. It wasn't Team Kenny. It was Team Tonga that fired the first shot, attacking everyone. The Elite. Hangman and Marty. Even Chase and Yujiro. All claiming to be the real Bullet Club. Judging by their T-Shirts, they'll probably be known as Bullet Club: Firing Squad. While everyone else will just be Bullet Club: The Elite. No word on where Bad Luck Fale and Taiji Ishimori sit on all this.

Overall, it was a pretty decent show, especially in the latter half. But the poor production, mediocre commentary and glaring saftey issues were a big distraction.

New episode of Being The Elite!

Those goggles Christopher Daniels was wearing made him look like a skinnier version of Riddick.

He actually reminds me of the villain Flash-points from The Black Scorpion (the show, not the wrestler).

My pics for the G1 are more based on what I WANT to happen. Not what I think will realistically happen.

I want Tanahashi to beat Okada to sell the story that Okada has lost his step a bit since falling to Omega, and I want Omega to just barely squeak a win in his block despite drawing a match with Ibushi. Then I can get Tana/Omega in the finals, a matchup I haven't seen before but really want to.

I also thought it was funny when Chris Jericho said he couldn't use "The List" because it was a WWE copyright. ^_^

Evil

I recently discovered that guy.

He's essentially a New Japan version of Undertaker or Bray Wyatt, right? Dat entrance, tho (sadly, I haven't found any clips of him wearing that laser-glove they said he's got).

Hope that leads to Marty vs. Y2J for the IWGP IC belt at the rock n wrestling cruise.

Dresses like Ministry taker. Fights like Bray. And no laser glove anymore it seems. But he did do this:

Holy balls. Huge news just broke.

So as you may or may not know, WWE has been hosting many of it's New York events at The Barclay's center, the cheaper rival venue of their old home Madison Square Garden. They host SummerSlam there and now the plan is to host the near entirety of their Mania weekend events in that building. MSG, none to happy with WWE, decided to book Mexico's AAA to host the first ever non- McMahon wrestling event in MSG in nearly a century. Not only that, but they were in talks with ROH about hosting their Super-card of Honor event there over Mania weekend.

That's when WWE decided to be a jealous controlling ex about their partner finding someone else. Allegedly, it took one call from Titan Towers to cause MSG to break off negotiations with ROH, for Mania weekend or any other future dates.

But of course, WWE didn't realize they were barking up the wrong tree.  You see, they didn't just screw with ROH. They screwed with ROH's parent company, Sinclair Broadcasting. One of the biggest broadcasting companies in the US. Someone with even more financial muscle than TitanSports. Inc.

And Sinclair didn't come to the fight alone. They bought Bushi-Road, the owners of New Japan Pro Wrestling, in as back up.

So basically what happened was Vince McMahon pissed off ROH CEO Joe Koff, who gave NJPW president Harold Meij a call and said "Hey, wanna piss off Vinny Mac Jr?"

And so, this happened:

Sweet Mother of Luna. This is huge. WCW couldn't even get the garden. Now the spiritual successor to ECW and the biggest company in Japan get to perform in the house that McMahon built, on the weekend of his company's largest show, head to head with NXT?

The first shots of the modern day wrestling war have been fired back.

@Denim&Venom

I'm imagining the reaction to "The Villain" Marty Scurll's theme song in Madison Square Garden...:o

Much like how WWE has their "Woo's" for Ric Flair, I'm picturing loud "Whoop, whoop" chants for Scurll.

First All In. Now MSG. Who'd have thought that a steampunk penguin like Marty the one man party  could make it so far?

I'm probably the minority but right now I have Sami Zayn's Worlds Apart theme set as my alarm clock.  I try and be out of bed in time by the Let's Go! part.

Koko B. Ware might want to have a one-off match to see who keeps the "Bird Man" moniker.

I know that Marty doesn't use that nickname but it would be an interesting comedy match.
