In Defense of The 100th Episode

Almost a year ago, the season 5 news popped up that there was going to be an episode in season 5 which focused solely on the background ponies. Me and many others were overjoyed when this news came out, however the closer to season 5 we get, the more people have said that this is just fan pandering on a whole new level. I'm hear to defend this, and explain why it isn't.

 

First off, in the recent trailer, one of the people who worked on the show said that they wanted to explore some characters which haven't been explored yet, but ones which have potential for some great stories. And that's the thing, the staff simply want to take our fantastic characters and use them to tell a good story, and that's a good thing because some of the characters our fandom has created are really interesting. For example. Derpy is a clumsy but well meaning mail mare with impaired vision. She is also single mom and raises her daughter the best she can even with her difficultys. I think that this isn't just fan service, I think DHX are using background ponies because their genuinely great characters.

 

Fan ideas are only fan service when they try to drown out the badness of a movie, have no reason to be there other than to please fans, and don't do anything with it. But it feels like here, they actually want to write and use these characters for creative reasons rather than fan pleasing ones. Sure, there's a bit of fan pleasing in there, but if they didn't like the characters they wouldn't do it.

I am not really concerned about the episode itself, because for all we know, it can actually be good.

 

What i am worried about, is the aftermath. This is a headcanon/fanon breaker. So many bronies have made theories for the BG's over the years and now, when the show is showing their canon personality, who knows how many bronies will be mad at it, because their headcanons get destroyed.

 

I will keep an open mind to this episode, eventhough my interest in the BG's was never big.

they only have themselves to be mad at, for making their headcanons and considering them the holy grail.

To get upset at DHX/ Hasbro for using their own characters is just stupid. If fans didn't want their headcanons to be broken, and be stupid enough to get upset about it, they shouldn't have made them in the first place.

That's why i barely have any and i don't even consider them holy.

I don't feel like you need to be in the position to defend anything. Leave that up to the writers (if they even care about the "boo hoo backlash, my headcanon was destroyed" immature fanrage) I doubt that they do.

Fans should be mature enough to accept whatever the actual owners of the characters do with them, instead of being ready to throw hissy fits and write death letters to the staff.

Thank you! I'm glad that I'm not the only one who's optimistic about the 100th episode.

 

Perhaps another thing I should mention is this - these are professional writers who are creating the 100th episode, not a run-of-the-mill fan who tries to push in tonnes of fanservice into their fanfic. It's not going to be like Double Rainboom either. Not to mention that the writers aren't going to take every headcanon that this fandom has made. Just because they won't use a popular one does not mean that said headcanon is ruined. We can still believe in our own regardless of what the 100th episode.

In any case I am cautiously optimistic in regards to the episode, but I am also going in with little to no expectations. The show is in capable hands and I have every faith in their abilities.

It could be interesting. They do it because I feel like it was time for some background ponies get more character development. It doesn't sound special for a 100th episode but they save all the special stuff at the end of the season. Besides it's just one episode and we still have 25 right?
