What Makes A Good Alicorn OC?

First of all, I must apologize if this topic has already been made and/or if it's posted in the wrong area.

 

So, naturally, Alicorn OCs get a lot of flak because Alicorns are the most powerful race in the series and are all unanimously Royalty. Using them in an RP gives an air of superiority that can be offensive to other RPers, which is why I've adapted my own Alicorn OC, he can be either a Unicorn, Pegasus or Earth Pony. However, I keep him an Alicorn for stories.

 

To me, an Alicorn must have a specific reason for existing, a Patron that they hold Guardianship for. Celestia's is the Sun, Luna's is the Moon, Cadance's is the magic of Lovers and Twilight's is Magic itself or the magic of Friendship, depending on how you read the situations. Alicorns also Royalty, as was seen through Twilight, becoming an Alicorn automatically gives one Royal status.

 

I've seen many, many posts all across the internet about what makes a bad Alicorn OC, so I submit to you all; what do you think makes a good Alicorn OC?

If they're not over-powered, don't have a dark past, etc. All of that cliche' shit.

Eh, personally I'm of the opinion that one can hit every Mary Sue nail square on the head and still be able to have a well-made character. It all depends on the writer's skill.

More on topic though, I'm pretty wary of alicorn OCs.

But if they have a legitimate, believable reason for their existence, then I'm cool with it.

They're just hard to get right.

 

Remember when you used to play with other kids? You'd pretend to be knights, soliders, pirates, whatever and then this one kid shows up and is like 'My dragon eats you all' 'I'm invincible, you can't kill me'   'haha you're dead, no I didn't die I dodged that'   'I summon a lightning storm that destroys all your forts in one swoop! I win!'

 

Yeah, nobody liked that guy

 

That's how roleplaying with an alicorn feels like. Alicorns are granted great power to carry out a certain duty, so being overpowered is in their nature. The very thing that defines them is what makes them so bad. You can't really take their power away, and if you do it'll look even worse. That horn and wings are telling everyone ''yo I'm sronger than y'all''. It never looks good.

 

I don't think there's a rule to making a good alicorn oc, they're just taboo.

My Alicorn is Prince Firemane and his Patron is the Stars. It's to show that he paints the sky with images to inspire creativity in ponies. It's also representative of his position as the bridge between Celestia's and Luna's duality. The Stars come out at night, but the Sun is also a Star, so he has a hoof in the worlds of day and night and can provide a different perspective.

That's exactly why I don't RP with my OC as an Alicorn. Even if I'm not "that guy" people are gonna talk at me like I am. But when it comes to a fanfic and fanart where you're, traditionally, the only contributor, Alicorns to me are much less taboo. Though they can be pretty cringy if not handled correctly.
