Agent turned to the siblings, who were sitting quietly. "Do you guys have any opinion on the situation?" He said, pointing his daggar at them. "The more info, the better... right?"

Melody remained sullen, staring at the table.

 

Sforzando realized he would have to answer for the both of them - something he hadn't done throughout his entire memory. He cleared his throat and turned to Agent.

"Err. Nothing to add really. You must have realized we aren't fighting ponys by now. We've only killed others in survival and would rather avoid direct fighting. We've got some tricks up our sleeves, but we'd much rather go through the back door, do what needs to be done, and get out. So why don't we avoid any unnecessary conflicts and adventures?"

"Well, I've attempted that formula before. Never works anymore." Agent said. "And you've only killed for survival?"

"you can't just chicken out on us, we need all the support we can get, if you don't go, that's 2 less ponies on our team and that could mean the difference between life or death"

"Chickening out isn't the problem Jacky boy." Agent said. "It's just that their methods are too... I can't find the word for it..."

Legacy nodded. "avoiding conflict is always a good idea, but sometimes it is impossible. Frost seemed to know exactly where and when we were in her realm, so it would be foolish to not at least be prepared for Ignite to do the same. All of us that go are probably going to need to fight. If you'd rather stay behind, we do need a few to guard the base and fill Garth in if he arrives while we're gone."

 

Righel raised his hoof. "back on the subject of taking a back door, is there a way that we could have a large group head straight for the stronghold to keep them occupied, while a smaller team portals in behind the stronghold? They might be able to sneak in that way."

 

Legacy considered this and thought silently for a full minute.

 

"yeeeeessssss..." she said with some hesitation. "I think i could make a portal that comes out in a specific location. It would take awhile to set up, though, and I would have to be with the group that uses it. And it wouldn't be exact, portalling to a random area is complicated enough."

"...I was gonna say risky, not impractical." Agent added. "And if we decide to go with that plan, who's more experienced in sneaking?"

"that would be me" jack said, "I could go past an entire army and them not notice"

"Where as some of you here may have lost them, we still have our morals and memories of they it used to be before this all happened. We try to hold onto what we remember so when the day comes that its safe to go back out, we can rebuild. It's for that reason that we try not to kill anypony - whether you believe it or not, there is some good somewhere in them. And it's people like you - those who won't even think about killing somepony - that makes others loose faith."

 

Melody looked up at the mention of stealth and smiled weakly.

"That is one area I'm particularly good at. The ability to completely silence one's steps is extremely valuable at avoiding detection."

Perhaps it would make up for other's deaths if I help these ponys...

"alright, me and melody will sneak in through the back" jack said

Agent smiled, then turned to Sforzando and frowned. "I remember believing that, and thinking that maybe some people deserve a second chance. And then you realize, it's gonna be a LONG time before that mentality holds true. Burn any thoughts of the past, and learn to kill without remorse. It helps when fighting."

Melody looked at Jack in disgust.

No way in hell I'm going to be stuck with that guy for any period of time by myself.

 

Sforzando frowned.

"I may be an alcoholic, but I'm an alcoholic because what it takes to survive a week in this world is wrong. There is no getting around it. Whether you admit it or not, you have murdered another pony at some point for no other reason other than suspicion. To many ponys are like that. Tell me - Have you ever killed a pony and watched as his foal cry over his dead body? Have you ever considered that some of these ponys may have others that depend on them? I understand that killing is required to live, but you should not be okay with it."

Sforzando could feel Melody shiver at that particular memory.

Jack looked at the way melody was looking at him

"it's the eye patch isnt it?"

"And yet, I am." Agent smiled and tilted his head. "Zando buddy, I've murdered ponies for many reasons but suspicion isn't one. I'm getting close though. And yes; I had heard a young baby foal cry, and cry her eyes out at the sight of her dead parents. She was killed soon after too."

*For the wrong reasons though...*

Sforzando stared at Agent in shock.

*Good God, this guy sounds like he might actually enjoy killing.*

 

 

Melody's mind replayed the memory of the foal again, one she had buried under months of survival. Her face filled with pain and looked down at the table again, trying to regain control of her emotions before they went out of control again for the fourth or fifth time this week.

Agent laughed. "You're reaction is priceless! If it make you feel any better, I'm a victim of the same circumstance, although by the looks of it you aren't interested in giving me sympathy!" Agent started scratching his head. "I guess that's what you get for being born into a family of war nuts."

"hey don't scare these guys too much, hes looking at you like your a psychopath, and she looks like she's about to lose it" jack said to agent

*I'd personally love to see that.*

"But of course!" Agent said, still smiling. "Although you wanna be careful about the psychopath comment."

Sforzando could sense the pain that filled Melody.

*Celestia burn him in hell. Are there any ponys here worth saving?*

He worried for her sister.

*It's almost like all these years are finally catching up with her emotionally.*

 

 

Melody's heart ached. Her mind fought for a reason that the foal deserved the fate it received.

*These are the Valkyrs that I've looked forward to meeting all this time? Some of them seem as bad as the Bards of Chaos. And now they think that I'm the psychopath?*

She longed for another Apple Whiskey, and could hear it calling from her room.

"Jack's got the idea." He nodded his head towards the pony. "Not gonna be any good when you freeze up because of some memories."

"He's right. I had almost the same expereince. I've seen a entire village burned to ash, and I tackled dozens of cases as a bounty hunter. I put death aside, and put the mission first. Thats how I've stayed alive for all these years."
