Dragons have a lot going for them in terms of powers, lifespan, and gathered material wealth, but from what we see they don't seem to have much resembling culture or civilization. Now for some that might be fine, feeling like outcasts today anyway, but I don't. I may still be figuring my way through life but I'm sure there is a place in society for me and in Equestria that would all but be an absolute certainty. Hell, last episode was about a guy who felt like he didn't belong but was just looking at things the wrong way. The benefits are pretty awesome (size, power, flight...) and belonging to a certain species doesn't mean I have to be a jerk or associate myself with jerks. Some dragons can go against their nature. It's still part of their nature. Just like Pinkie Pie making others smile is part of her nature. There is no creature that can stand against a dragon in the MLP universe at least not without alternate means. The mane 6 are very very lucky they didn't get barbecued in the episode Dragonshy. While we haven't seen dragons use magic in show yet there have been quite a few dragons in mythology that have been depicted as being able to use magic. Dragons, are worshipped as gods in some cultures and with how powerful dragons are it is understandable why that is the case. As much as dragons are awesome creatures, I would be a pony simply because dragons are lazy, greedy creatures that don't really do anything. The dragons we have seen so far fit that category though considering that Spike is not like that I think it reasonable to think that there are other dragons in the series that are also not like that.
