Bats don't have feathers but they have wings and are mammals and have fur. Pegasus are one weird breed. They almost make me think Pegasus are a minor type of chimera.

 

Also is Rarity actually a stallion? Since eyelashes usually tell us the pony is a girl...

I don't think so. I like to think it as that Rarity has eyelashes but they're probably not as prominent as a female pony's should be so she wears fake ones to make them a little more prominent, like how girls do so in real life. Makes sense to me, since Rarity is basically the the most feminine of the Mane 6 and wears eyeshadow, why not wear fake eyelashes?

Well, perhaps ugly was a bit of a stretch but possibly didn't find her own lashes to be satisfyingly beautiful enough so I guess maybe cut of her real ones in favour of fake ones that are more aligned with the look she likes. Don't think she's a transgender or a hermaphrodite unless that was more thinking loudly than actually thinking that.

Methinks Equestria doesn't play by the same rules; think of the Timber Wolves.  Wolves.  Made of timber.  Besides: I see the appeal of both the downy softness of wings and the feel of a short, light-blue coat. x3

 

Although the "eyelash test" has served me well over the years, Rarity's muzzle shape is also a reliable indicator of her sex.

Wings on pegasi are weird to us, but for them I'm sure it's as normal as humans having digits on our hands and feet.  Since pegasi are my favorite pony species after thestrals/bat ponies, I love how different they are from the other two, namely because you can do a lot of fun stuff with pegasi.  Preening is an especially cute activity that many postulate they engage in (the act of cleaning one's feathers routinely), and I look forward to working it into my own fanfiction at some point.

I 1st saw this show w my 6 year old niece & made the mistake of thinking Scootaloo was a boy.  (It's the haircut.  Back in the 1960s, half the guys in my school had that haircut)  Being patronized by a 6 year old is one of the many

As to fur & feathers, IRL one of the 1st birds was the Apertyx (I'm going on my memory here, that's probably misspelled)  It was a bird w hairy feathers.  (It's in the BC cartoon strip, the bird on the turtle)

 

Even ignoring the influence of magic, evolution took a vastly different path in EQ.

Yes very bird-like if you think about it. Which makes sense because they have feathers along with their normal pony fur.

Point of order: Ponies/horses have body HAIR, not FUR. It is structured like their manes and tails, and is similar to human hair (both on the head and body). Fur is quite different in structure, and is closer to how feathers form in birds (layering of different kinds).

 

Also, no I do not find it odd. It is a magical place full of adorable sapient cartoon ponies, so the last thing on my mind is something like that being "odd"...

Yup. Hair comes in a "one size/one layer fits all" and fur is a multi-layered hair-like configuration, with an almost down-like layer beneath the longer more-hair-like outer layer. Dogs/cats/bears have fur. Primates/equines/rodents have hair.

Well did see her put them on in AT the gala during the whole getting prepped scene with spike.  So was realy no suprise.

I never thought Rarity's eyelashes were a big deal plenty of girls wear fake ones. ._. As for the wings and hair thing? I never found it weird at all. Maybe it is because growing up I liked unicorns and pegasus.
