Why does Fungus look so scary?

I literally have a fear for its appearance a bit like people who fear spiders or snakes.

Every time I see it I feel my skin crawl and I start to feel dirty and a sense of overwhelming intimidated fear.

Thoughts?

I drink fungal tea, so it certainly isn't my fear.

Sausage and pepperoni for me, thanks

I love sausage!

I drink fungal tea, so it certainly isn't my fear.

Remember that yeast is a fungus, so most of us eat it daily in bread.

Personally I cannot stand macro-fungi. No mushrooms for me. Taste off and look weird. The only macro scale fungus I will touch with my hands are ferns (and yes, ferns are fungi, not plants. They reproduce via spores and are therfore asexual.). Outside of that, micro scopic fungi do not bother me is they are safe. Brewer's yeast, Bread yeast are ones I consume daily. Oh and I LOVE Nutritional Yeast. So yummie when used correctly.

Wow so informative, great response Shapphire, I don't mind it in bread.

Depends on what kind you get. Some of it tastes like ginger ale, some brands taste like drinking vinegar, it's fizzy, too.

Interesting, I heard it's quite popular in Asia. When I visit a country there they seem to sell them amongst the tea or coffee shops.

I know right, it's terrifying!

I think the picture you posted is a bit gross, but I don't find it as repulsive as you described you felt.

Maybe some people find it gross as a protective instinct. It's not exactly the safest thing around.

Same reason as people who are quite afraid of spiders and snakes. Their amygdala (part of the brainstem the controls fight/flight) is over-reactive to something that evolutionarily has been a threat to our well being. If you've ever had food poisoning, chances are you were a victim of eating a toxic fungus, that's what mold is.

You know, I was thinking about this the other day--there's something...fascinating and appealing to me about mushrooms.  I just think they're neat.  Even the word mushroom is appealing.  I love to say it.  M u s s s h h h roooooommmm....  There's so many different kinds, and they're all neat looking.  You know that scene at the beginning of E.T where they do the tracking shots in the foggy forest with a bunch of weird looking shrooms and fungi?  That was my favorite part of the movie as a kid.  I would literally watch that and then shut the movie off.  I don't think I'm completely crazy, and I don't think it's just me, because after all, there's a whole kindgom based around mushrooms: THE MUSHROOM KINGDOM.

And let's not forget, the ruler of said kingdom is Princess Toadstool!  And then there's Toad, who's head is a mushroom top.

And then there's the mushroom islands of Minecraft, with the mooshrooms.

And the Terraria mushroom biome, too, what with its Truffle npc!

Oh, and how about the cute fungi from Kingdom Hearts?

It goes on and on.  Mushrooms just have a certain whimsy about them.

Funny thing is I hate eating them.  :/

Now that looks nasty. That fungus probably looks appetizing for the animals living in the forest. Bright colored fungus is meant to attract animals to eat them and to kill them.

Fungi species are definitely creepy because they are neither animal nor plant.

I also hate coral and don't understand people that like to go scuba diving to see them and find them beautiful. There can be tons of dangerous flora where it's chock full of coral like jellyfish.

Never liked mushrooms in the yard or on my pizza.

Fungus does tend to look rather... unsettling. Though in some instances it can look rather beautiful.
