Samurai Mare

Congrats, your name has now been pointlessly gendered! :Flutter-wink:

:pinkie:
Oh my good friend, it is not pointlessly gendered. It is helpfully gendered.
Hope you're ready, here comes a historical fact:

Spoiler

So basically, the title samurai was usually a title given to males because males were usually the only ones employed to be a samurai.
It's not that females were not allowed to be samurai, they just weren't officially hired to be one. Some could marry into a samurai family, learn the ways of Bushido, learn the fighting techniques, etc. And in cases where the samurai of the family was incapable of fighting or just away on duty, the female leader of the family might rise up to take on the battles they couldn't be there for. They weren't referred to as samurai because, again, they weren't officially hired into the position. They might be called something else, like "Onna-bugeisha". But for all intents and purposes, they pretty much were female samurai. Kind of hard to explain, but the best way to put it is... The title samurai was gender neutral in concept, just not in practice. And in more modern pieces of Japanese fiction and pop culture, the concept of a female samurai is perfectly welcome and accepted!

So saying "female samurai" or "samurai mare" might be gendering the title, it's not pointless. If anything, it helps! It spreads the understanding that any gender can truly be samurai.
