Azureth 687 July 27, 2015 Share July 27, 2015 So my roommate and friends know I am a fan of MLP but I don't make them watch it or talk about it much, but they love to bring up "You watch a show targeted at little girls" and "It's sad for a grown man to like a girls show" among other such talk.My question is, why does it matter to them so damn much? I mean seriously if, as a man, you are into ANYTHING that could be viewed un-manly they love to try to guilt trip you into "being a man" and will go on about how it's so sad a man would watch a "girls show". Now I realize a man can get a comment like those for other things but why does a man not being what they think a man should be bother them so much? What really bothers me is that is about the ONLY thing they say in regards to why watching it is bad. I'll ask why is it so bad and they'll just continue about it being for little girls.
Spartan 433 July 27, 2015 Share July 27, 2015 Well, they aren't wrong.. But letting them get to you is letting them win. So, as with MANY things in life, ignore them. MLP:FIM is geared towards young girls, like it or not that was the main goal at the beginning. But many older folk have seen the old version of MLP, and that was pretty heavily geared towards girls, if i remember right.
Azureth 687 July 27, 2015 Author Share July 27, 2015 Oh I am well aware of that, it's not something I deny. But so are pixar movies and the like, yet many adults still enjoy them so how is watching MLP much different?
Guest July 27, 2015 Share July 27, 2015 A better question is: why care? People are going to judge you based upon everything in your life, you just have to deal with it and shrug it off. AlbaTross 1,586 July 27, 2015 Share July 27, 2015 Well, if the fact that it's unmanly is their only objection, perhaps you can explain to them why it is you like the show. There was a point in time when I teased someone for being into the show, but I thought it was a joke. I hadn't actually seen any episodes at that point, and he didn't adequately explain why he liked it. It took actually watching the pilot for me to find out that I actually like it too. Keep in mind, most people probably don't know anything about the show. G3 is exactly what I imagined when I thought of My Little Pony, which wasn't very often. I'm not necessarily suggesting making these guys watch an episode of FiM, but you can at least give reasons as to why you like the show, and perhaps they will be intrigued by what they hear.
Justin_Case001 4,903 July 27, 2015 Share July 27, 2015 It's because females were the ones denied rights and freedoms throughout history. No, really, that's the whole reason. Women were mistreated and fought for rights for thousands of years. Women were long thought of as the inferior sex. And of course, in some parts of the world, women are still treated like garbage. But even in our reletively evolved cuture, a stigma of this history remains. Women are much more free to transcened their gender roles without this sort of criticism, because when they do, they are thought to be empowering themselves. There's a completely lucicrous and unfair double standard that when a man does, says, likes, wears, or watches something feminine, he's somehow embarassing, lowering, or degrading himself. Even in the case of an adult watching a cartoon aimed at children, women, for the most part, would not get criticized for watching a "boys" cartoon. I believe that all roles and mindsets would be inverted if we had had a matriarchal society throughout all of history, with men being oppressed and denied rights. This insanity needs to end.

Because in my case they bring it up for no reason and will happily tell others. What really prompted me to make this topic was earlier a friend came over and before I went to the living room my roommate had already told him about me liking MLP and as soon as I go in the friend says "So I hear you like little ponies" and made a big deal about how I, as a grown man, could like a "show meant for little girls". Then don't care? Making this topic kind of shows it's getting to you which is what they want. Guys like to bust on each other. Shit I like cooking shows, and other crap and I still have a wife, my own car, and am going into the air force. Doesn't get more "manly" than having an active sex with with a female, being the breadwinner and having a career. If people think the other crap I am doing is somehow invalidating my masculinity then I question what they are doing with their lives. I doubt your friends are doing something so amazing with their lives that puts them worlds above others, so why care? Just ignore it and shrug it off. Play it off like it's cool, and change the subject. Hell whenever I got someone trying to punk me about something being "uncool" I played it off so well that they thought it was cool. You can like the lamest crap and still convince people it's cool if you know how to talk.
RavenholmZombie 1,330 July 27, 2015 Share July 27, 2015 Sure, MLP is geared towards "little girls", but the big question is "So?" So what if we're not the intended audience for this show? We live in a somewhat free society and are more than capable of watching and enjoying whatever the heck we want to. Now, my question to the OP is, why are you letting the words of an Anti-Brony get to you? 1 RavenholmZombie - Brony since 2011

FoxyCryptid 4,330 July 27, 2015 Share July 27, 2015 Because they're so insecure in their masculinity that they're afraid their balls are going to shrivel up and fall off the minute they take a break from constantly re-affirming it. I honestly think a certain level a level of it comes from them being jealous that most of us are secure enough in our manhood that we don't have to go around around proving it to people in order to feel good like they do. 2 "You know, I don't know who or what you are Methos, and I know you don't want to hear this, but you did teach me something. Grepper 3,192 July 27, 2015 Share July 27, 2015 You could just ignore their jabs at your interests, and tell them you don't care about their opinions on what you like. In reality it seems as if you do care what they think because you are posting this here, though. Reiterated: If you don't seem to care about what they think about your being a fan, they probably will bring it up less and less.

Malinter 3,064 July 27, 2015 Share July 27, 2015 Tom & Jerry is aimed at kids. Pokemon was aimed at kids. Thomas the Tank Engine is aimed at kids. I've watched all of these growing up and still do. (except thomas.... don't even know half of the new characters XD). Its a cartoon. Its for everyone to watch. True the show was aimed at girls because that is who Hasbro wanted to sell the following toyline to. They made it so adults could watch it as well because no parent is gonna let their kid watch MLP if they can't stand the tv show, they'd just make their kid watch something else. 1 My OC's: Malinter, Rahl, Vengeful impact & alias-the-marked-one First fic i've written since forever here Skype: Malinter@Outlook.com "Defeating a sandwich only makes it tastier." most legendary quote ever. MAIKUN 262 July 28, 2015 Share July 28, 2015 I mean this is outrageous! My dad and my older brother think the show is for girls? But NOOOOO I am Brony since 2013 and I didn't get away with it!

Floofie 799 July 28, 2015 Share July 28, 2015 Okay, but why do male adults watch it? It's still a girls cartoon, right? So what if it is? Just because something is for girls that makes it bad for male people to enjoy it? That's an old and still common stereotype that something girly is considered bad just for being like that. It doesn't matter if it is girly, pink, has ponies, what matters is that it truly is a good show for every person, every human being. Gender is irrelevant. https://www.reddit.com/r/mylittlepony/wiki/whywewatch

Sunset188 193 July 29, 2015 Share July 29, 2015 Eh who cares what people think? I've never encountered anyone who has made fun of me for liking ponies, aside from my dad (who by now has learned to keep his mouth shut about it). I go out and wear my pony shirts proudly because I love the show. This show is very important to me, it makes me happy even when I'm really down. So I don't care if others don't understand. I hate all these gender stereotypes. The bottom line is if it makes you happy then that's all that matters. Other people are irrelevant.

Trixie Heartstrings 434 July 29, 2015 Share July 29, 2015 I'd try to make the other person look like he/she is the ridiculous one by saying something like "yeah, so?" Or, I'd point out that there are plenty of kids movies/shows that adults enjoy, and that no one bats an eye when a girl is into "manly" stuff. Shanks 10,816 July 29, 2015 Share July 29, 2015 It is all about conformity to social norms, far too many don't even question where they came from or why we have them they just blindly follow them. Women have been treated like shit for thousands of years and while things have come a long way there is still a ridiculous amount of ignorance and double standards. If something is a "girls show" it is automatically given a pass if it sucks and almost nobody bats an eye when grown women are into "boys" shows yet because this challenges social and gender norms and long held stereotypes it makes some people uncomfortable so they tend to come with "explanations" based on baseless assumptions. The assumptions being bronies being gay overgrown man children pedophiles. Time seems to be on our side as things like bronies are started to be accepted more and more. 1 Rarity Get's Cockroaches
