Could Fluttershy function in the Pokemon universe?

On the one hand, she'd get to see hundreds of cute little animals she's never seen before. On the other hand, she won't get to take care of them unless she catches them. To do this, she'd need another Pokemon to beat them down.

To her horror, she would also learn that trainers will make their Pokemon fight to gain even more Pokemon, money, or some other benefit at the animals' expense. This is a lot like keeping chickens for cock fighting, which most societies would consider deplorable.

And this has become so accepted that the only thing boycotting tournaments or other Pokemon events will accomplish is make Fluttershy a target for endless ridicule.

Is this something Fluttershy would be able to come to terms with, or would it make her hang herself?

She would leave, fairly fast with extreme speed. While quite a few Pokemon have positive uses and lives, many seem to be enslaved by humans for many things. Flutters would have none of this. She would either leave immediately or go ballistic with anger and declare war upon us humans for doing such things. I really do think that the second one is very possible. :P

Nurse Joy and Brock may be proof that there may be some room for Fluttershy too... I mean, there are pokemon farms too, and sanctuaries... you don't really have to go around hunting them if you think about those. And fluttershy herself doesn't go taking care of EVERY animal out there... she only cares for the ones that she can reason with.

I think she could handle it, really. ^^

Even if that's true, the fact that so many Pokemon are regularly being abused for sport could get to her head. That's unheard of in Equestria. I can't see her not wanting to help them all.

I think she'd do ok, at least as long as she was in the anime universe. James of Team Rocket has never actually caught a Pokemon through violent means, all his Pokemon joined him through free will or because of an act of kindness. Also in the anime and even the games, not all Pokemon are used for fighting. There are contests instead of actual combat and there are some Pokemon which just derp around in buildings as pets/friends.

Edit: Oh, except for inkay... Because heaven forbid we have an antagonist with some positive qualities.

I could see her as either a pokemon breeder, pokemon doctor like Nurse Joy or someone who works on the pokemon day care center.

So there still are professions that Fluttershy could have in the universe and not be out of place for her.

The thing about Pokemon is that unlike dogs and roosters, most pokemon are pretty much sapient, and understand when abuse is occurring.

As long as they aren't psychologically manipulated (the same way humans can be manipulated into staying in abusive relationships), pokemon can and WILL attack/ditch trainers they don't like (James' Garyados), or at the very least, completely ignore their trainer's commands (Ash's Charmeleon). So the pokemon that do fight usually do it because they like it and like their trainers.

Fluttershy would probably make it her mission to rescue pokemon from abusive trainers and find them new homes.

As others have said, there are plenty of roles Fluttershy could take that would not conflict with her stance against violence.  While I don't think the topic has ever come up in the anime there are no doubt those in the Pokemon world opposed to battling with them.  There's no reason Fluttershy and others couldn't advocate for phasing out the violence while continuing to tend to their needs in the meantime.

I think she could "function" fine. Being the pacifist that she is, I don't think she would wholly approve of Pokemon battling. She panicked at the mere thought of her animals being scared or hurt by Twilight's harmless magical spells, so I'm sure an all out physical brawl between two creatures in the name of competition would definitely freak her out a bit, at least initially. Over time, I think she could grow to accept Pokemon battles as a learning experience between trainers and Pokemon, and not as something that is truly detrimental, as that's the way Pokemon battles are portrayed in the games and such. That said, I don't think she would ever seriously wish to compete in Pokemon battles and would only resort to it if forced to. I think of Fluttershy as being more of a Pokemon nurse - someone who takes injured, sick, or abandoned Pokemon under her wing and works to heal and take care of them, much like she did with Philomena. And there are ways to catch Pokemon without hurting them too badly. She'd just need the right attacks and some quality Pokeballs. Or, as I said, just befriend Pokemon who are in need of a loving trainer.
