Red John in The Mentalist.

 

He started out as this bad@$$ Moriarty-type who kept eluding pretty much everyone, but then gradually devolved into one of those blatant Aizen-types as the seasons went on.

 

And then he was finally revealed and killed off... in such an @$$pull way -- according to most viewers -- that the series outright ended only a season or two later.
