gaming Them's Fightin' Herds! (AKA MLP Fighting Is Magic: Lawyer-Friendly Edition)

In case you are unfamiliar with the story behind this game:

Once upon a time, some really cool dudes who called themselves "Mane6" decided to make a game about the characters of My Little Pony hitting each other. The game had lots of awesome, high-quality sprites and really cool music. It was so hype that there were discussions of having a mini-tournament at EVO (The biggest fighting game tournament in the would), but unfortunately the developers were hit by a cease-and-desist from Hasbro's lawyers. But even that wasn't enough to stop these badass guys. The game had attracted so much attention that Lauren Faust herself offered to help Mane6 in designing new characters, and the creators of Skullgirls allowed them to use their custom game engine for free. And after years of waiting, we finally have information about the new game!

So far, it appears that the characters are mostly re-skins of the My Little Pony fighters we had seen so far: Applejack is now Arizona the cow, Rarity is Velvet the deer, and Pinkie Pie is Paprika the Alpaca. There is also a mysterious unicorn who will probably be the new Twilight Sparkle.

The game will have a dynamic music system: each stage has its own theme song, but the instruments that play the melody will change depending on which characters are fighting and who is winning.

A kickstarter will start on September the 21st. So prepare yourself to throw money at your screen!

Oh, cool! As a devout player of Skullgirls (HOCUS POKE-YOU), I'm quite excited by this game, especially with the use of Reverge Lab's custom engine. Definitely a pick-up for me when it comes out.

Also, Velvet is probably going to become @'s new waifu. Just saying.

:muffins: As much as I like the idea of the game (and the fact that Lauren faust is involved). :fiery: I feel that it would have been better with pallet swaps of the original game, with tweeks here and there.

:lie: (I'm probably the black sheep/unpopular opinion on this)

pallet swaps of the original game

The problem with this is that, as long as they keep the name My Little Pony on the cover, it's under Hasbro's domain. They can also get sued because of using the exact same art style. While similar, you can make a case in court that this game is different from the original with sufficient differences, but if it has the My Little Pony trademark, they're violating a C&D order and will get sued to the point where they won't be able to maintain their identity of the company, let alone think about making games, and they'll all get a near-permanent stigma in the industry that may prevent their continuation of the field. So it's not that it's a bad idea (although I would be going meh if that was the case), it's just that using anything under the brand My Little Pony including the same art style is going to get their rears sued out from underneath them.

  • 3 weeks later...

I love the looks of this game. So colorful. The music is fantastic as well. Yet,I wish for there to be some male characters.

Perhaps,a male mountain goat named Bucky, the Jersey Devil,or a male camel named Imhotep.

Edit: There's a lot more hoofed animals that Mane6 could use for other characters. So far,we only have.

Arizona- Bull

Velvet- Reindeer

Paprika- Alpaca

Oleander- Unicorn

Pom- Sheep

Tianhuo- Longma

So,what about donkeys,buffalo,giraffe,llamas,moose,oxen,wildebeest,yaks,and zebras?

Manman20x6, I already made a topic about the game some days ago.

My topic was made about two weeks earlier though. But the site's search system is atrocious so I don't blame you for not seeing it.

I had discarded the idea as soon as I learned there would not be ponies, because let's face it, that's the main reason people were interested in the first place.

However, the new characters Faust made are actually pretty decent-looking, and the gameplay looks smooth, so I'll keep my eye on it. The only thing I don't like is that little pause every time someone lands a hit, that looks like it could get really distracting.

...But that's just my opinion.

I don't get why people say that. Were so many "fans" going to force themselves to play a game they do not like just because there are ponies?

I have to admit that ponies were what made me specifically notice the game in the first place, but as a fighting game fan, I would probably have become aware of the game either way. The leaked demos and fan-made expansions of Fighting is Magic convinced me that Mane6 really do know their stuff when it comes to designing a good fighting game, whether or not we are familiar with their characters.

I think it was more that I was neutral on the game's mechanics, but the idea of a decent pony-themed game is what made me actually interested in it.

Well that's a bit shallow don't you think? You don't think that many people enjoyed it because it was a good game? The PreAlpha is still getting played, and Mane6 is still a talking point in the Fighting game community.

Let's not forget it was almost at EVO. The largest Fighting game stage you can be! And it wasn't just because ponies...

Let's put it this way: I'd never touch the game if it weren't good. Ponies or no.
