critique wanted Critique or opinions wanted - 2 different styles which seems better?

I typically work in 3d but I have tried branching out into more illustrative work using my 3d skills as a tool. I was wondering if I could get some critique and/or opinions on my two takes on the same picture. Which do you like better? What conveys the image best for your? If you're going more technical what does or doesn't work and why in X picture?

I am always trying to learn and improve so this is just another step in that journey.

My usual 3d style. I messed the lighting up a little and neglected to make it as dramatic as in the following picture, but I can make it look the same. That being said, does this type of lighting/shading look better than if there were shadows as in the next one?

My new attempt. As you can see I used the 3d model as a base and worked on inking, coloring and shading from there. I'm still learning on the mouth part and I neglect the other eye for reasons ;)

Thanks again for the input!

I really like what you have done but the lip is a little off.

I think this belongs in the Fan Art section.

Done. I have also posted this exact thread in the fan art forum. Thanks!

You really like what I did with which one? Or both?

Yeah, the lip gave me some trouble. It'll need work on the next one.

Remember, the lip  is always the hardest.

Just letting you know I moved this thread to Creative Resources -> Visual Art as this is the place to seek opinions and critique on visual art like this. :)

Thanks. :)

@@Sterity, I think the first one is stronger. I'm a 2D artist myself, and I think I can say that the second one, while foundationally it could work, your technique needs a good deal more refinement. It looks almost like you don't quite know where to put your shadows/highlights just yet, so that's probably the main area I'd look into practicing or drawing from references more if you want to keep up with that kind of style.  :) Relatedly, maybe not just highlight the edges, as for rounded shapes, there tends to be some bleedover or partial highlighted areas.

I dunno. I think both could probably use a little polish on the mouth, but overall I think the first one is your stronger piece for sure.  But, I think both are awesome areas to continue working in. Being well rounded is a great artistic quality.

Both are very well made for the type of art you are working on. Even so I believe between the two the top one stands at a higher quality than the lower. One of the main points to look at is the colors of the eyes. For the lower image the eyes pop out way too much compared to the above image. Other than than it really is just color scheme that changes the views. The top one is more of what we are used to and as such it seems better. If the bottom wasn't solely based on twilight it would be help at about the same height.
