The deal with Starlight Glimmer

Aaaaand WELCOME ladies and gentlemen to another game of "What is it this time?" as we try to guess the back story of a villain so it can be their excuse of why they are jerks!! :D

Today's villain is Starlight Glimmer!

Personally, I just think she was bullied as a little filly. Maybe she had a "Diamond Tiara" in her life and was a late bloomer when it came to her cutie mark. I'm also guessing that there is a flaw about herself that she despises and she takes it out on others who possess good talents and purposes so she can make herself feel superior (or just feel less crappy about herself).

Not sure where she came from though...probably lived at another place other than the village she ran. Maybe she founded the place to make it feel like her own castle where she has her own loyal subjects. Or it could be that she wanted to feel like a hero. I noticed how she was super angry when expressing how SHE created harmony. Perhaps that really is what she wants but she is going about it the wrong way? Who knows...

She's Princess Cadence and Shining Armor's kid from the future that came back in time because she hated how her parents were more important than she was and that she couldn't get out of their shadows and blamed destiny (ie cutie marks) as the reason.

Okay kidding aside, this is part of the reason I dislike Starlight, we weren't giving a motive.

Holy Sh*t please don't do that. That is too convincing and now I can honestly imagine Starlight being the spawn of Cadence and Shining Armor...holy crap you had me.

I'm sure we will be given a motive in the finale. Just curious on other people's guesses

Yeah I mean it does fit rather well

What with the time traveling finale and all

buuut I think it's just a bit too outlandish to actually happen.  (Course watch the show prove me wrong and they actually go with it XD)

Both Sunset and Starlight are presented as alternate versions of Twilight, they are story devices to show 'what could be'.

That said, while Sunset was a dissaffected student that chose a different path, Starlight is a little more complex.

Part of this is that we're still not entirtely sure what she was trying to do. You could argue that she represented an exaggeration of Twighlight's desire for order, but the premiere then reveals that she has an ulterior motive that is not fully outlined.

What was she doing collecting cutie marks/talents for? Her ultimate goal was not a creation of a new social order, but we are left in the dark as to what it actually is.

Until the finale hits, we really can't finish the picture of who Starlight is and what she wants.

Valid point. She says she wants harmony and order, but it could be something else like maybe she's collecting for another purpose. I am not entirely sure, but I hate I have to wait for an entire season just to find out. Whatever the reason behind her logic or WHAT her logic is, it must be big

We really didn't need to see why she had the particular ideology she has. I kinda hope we won't see it either, but for the sake of guessing, I think she was just jealous of other ponies talents, and blamed it on inequality causing disharmony, rather than her own pettiness being the cause.

Going to be honest, I don't think Starlight glimmer has ANY real backstory. She's just kind of "There" as a character who exists to be an antagonist, not unlike what doomsday was when he was first introduced.

I doubt she has any real reason to be what she's like or any deep explanations, she's just a pony who naturally exists in the world so the writers can have a Nega-twilight to use for a villain in the series. (Since technically, Sunset shimmer wasn't in FIM and thus the show hasn't technically had a nega-twilight yet).

This is one of the reasons I really don't like her so much as a villain. She's not bad, I put her on par with Trixie, lightning dust or Suri, or the mane-iac. But I don't think she's nearly on par with the other two parter villains like Chrsyalis or Discord. About the only character she's better than is Sombra, and that's like claiming to be better than the special needs child on the playground in schoolwork

Honestly, if it turns out that Starlight doesn't have a story or a real reason about what's she's doing, I wouldn't put her on par with Trixie or the others you mentioned....I'd put her on par with Tirek and The Sirens....she may even be a greater villain than they were but many wouldn't think that because the execution in her actions and personality weren't as epic as the others.

Granted, it isn't implied that her methods are to rule Equestria (or maybe it is and we just haven't gotten a clear picture yet), but she's basically stripping away cutiemarks. Which, in my opinion, is far more sinister than stripping away the magic of ponies. Cutiemarks aren't just illustrations of talent...but are what sets ponies apart. It represents their individuality and symbolizes their purpose in life more than anything. In away, that's stripping magic as well. And even after stripping away what makes them....themselves...she colonizes them and manipulates them to thinking what she's doing is RIGHT. I don't want to go deep into this topic but I will say this: this happens in real life and I'm surprised it ended up on a kid's show. There has been both major and minor cases in which people will manipulate and brainwash people into accepting their sinister ways or outrageous religious bullsh*t.

Tirek stole all the magic for...no reason but to rule equestria. To gain power and be top dog where every magical creature in the pony universe is beneath him. He has no dark back story that leads him to be this bad guy. He doesn't even care much to the fact that his brother betrayed him so it wasn't like some revenge story...this was who he was even before that happened. There's no motive...no reason...no back story to encourage him to be who he is and what he does. That, in itself, is pure evil.

Same for the Sirens. From the beginning you see all they really want is adoration. They feed off of it to grow powerful just so they can use the power they've gain to....gain even more power? It's as if they feed just for the sake of feeding. Not to survive, not to rule the world (despite this being an outcome had they succeeded in both Equestria and the Human World) but to drain the negative energy out of everyone and manipulate every being. That.....is pure evil. In fact, for the Sirens....it's just their nature. It could even be Tirek's nature as well.

For Starlight, this isn't second nature for any pony. Which would make her even more sinister than the Sirens and Tirek. If it turns out that there is no back story that influenced her to become who she is...or she has no real reason for the evil actions she's been committing...then holy sh*t Starlight could be the most sinister villain of all despite how downplayed her execution was in the Season 1 premiere. In fact, I would say she is. Why else would the writers not only let her be the start of the Season but the ending as well? Something is up....

I would seriously scream bloody cop-out if Starlight doesn't get a fleshed out back-story.  There's just some potential there about a past that I seriously expect a motive and reason for actions to be explained later. I honestly believe that her motives and reasons to have created the town in the first place, and her getting away, were done on purpose from the get-go so that they can create an aura of mystery and interest about her.  Seriously, there better be a real back-story to her or I will just fall into a rather saddening mood about how no antagonist cannot be written rather interestingly in this series.

I don't know where I stand when it comes to wanting a back story for her or not.

There are some cases where an explanation actually makes things more intriguing. If she doesn't receive one, then she is automatically the most evil villain in mlp hands down. If there is a reason, I'm curious to see what it is.

Personally for me, I'm more interested that there will be a back story for her.   If they don't really plan on giving her an actual back-story then I feel it would be such a waste of a good antagonist and also about addressing some other things.  Granted, I have expectations at this point for her, she's seriously the most interesting antagonist that has appeared on the series thus far to me, as currently I feel that every other antagonist prior has been just a one time show-off which gets kicked off later (with the exception of Discord and Trixie) to fill the most basic role of being a 'villain' of the week.  Starlight gets to re-appear a 2nd time and I'm more excited about this because I feel there can be much more detail teased out about her.  I'm interested in what they'll do with her for the finale. Just my thoughts.

Funny how my least favorite villain, is the first villain to have a season opener and closer. 4 episodes! Let that sink in for Sombra, Chrysalis, Tirek or Nightmare Moon fans.

I'm pretty sure whatever she has in store will hit hard. That doesn't mean there will be some.awesome fight scene like with Tirek...or and emotional instability like Discord.....something far worse.

But I'm not going yo set the bar too high. I try not to expect too much from FiM anyways so I won't be dissapointed or sweating the small stuff. Only when I see an episode could have been executed better is when I'm bothered a bit.

So I anticipate a great finale...but nothing perfect.

She believes that cutie marks ruin friendships and that everypony should be equal, not realizing that's not how friendship works, also I wonder if she was a student of Celestia's, she seems like she could have been.

So she was taught friendship and harmony but got it all wrong and decided her methods were the best way to create harmony and friendship?......I can actually dig that.

It wouldn't be the first time any apprentice or whatever does something thinking it's the right thing. It happens in real life too: how some individuals believe killing off mankind or something will bring peace

She was bullied one day because she was a blank flank...... She got so mad that one day she wished so hard that she could take other ponies marks away, that her mark appeared and gave her the power to do just that..... She was then Subsequently banished from normal pony society, found an abandoned town, devised her plan, took in unsuspecting victims.... Easy and predictable.

I partly predict this. I'm hoping is more creative than that, but who knows?

I hope we get more details on her in the finale, because the season premiere did not give us much to work with, which is one of the many reasons why the premiere did not do it for me. Ironically, as I have expressed before, I really REALLY do not like how the finale is sounding and both of these things are great examples to why I don't like Starlight much. She seems to be able to do so much and yet we know almost nothing about her.

Some spoilers here.

I mean, she is gonna alter the timeline? Really? Is that not completely 100% overkill? So she is gonna go from brainwashing ponies and for some unknown reason being able to steal cutie marks, to completely screwing up an entire timeline? It just seems...stupid. Then again I HATE time alteration plots.

So really, I have little to no sympathy for her character, because we still don't even know why she does anything. Luna was jealous, Discord is the embodiment of chaos so that makes sense, Chrysalis wanted to expand her kingdom for her 'children', and Tirek wanted revenge for events long ago when he and his brother were imprisoned. Starlight? Oh, she is angry. I guess. So she is like Sombra, she is just a bit more interesting than him. Yay. I don't know, it just doesn't appeal to me.

She isn't 'bad' or anything, just very uninteresting.

But we don't know for sure just how far she was planning to get in the first place. They gave us so little in the premiere on purpose so we can be guessing like this. It gives us suspension....this is the first villain who's the main focus of both a premiere and a finale.

Honestly, she is the most dangerous out of all of them. A pony who can strip away cutie marks? That's plain evil for reasons I've already explained in an earlier post within this thread. I blame the execution of her that downplays just how much of a snisiter villain she really is...how how much of a danger she can be.

We don't even know why she's altering time...it could still tie in to her plan...whatever plan that may be. We should wait for the finale before we come up with a solid opinion of her. My opinion of her isn't even solid....it's based on the assumption she has no real motive for what she is doing and is just plain evil. We'll see
