cider float 2,538 October 18, 2015 Share October 18, 2015 Since the CMC got their cutie marks ever wonder if cutie marks aren't really predetermined? Because how would the cutie marks be exactly shields of the same kind on three different fillies that just so happens to call themselves Cutie Mark Crusaders? This has opened up a new mystery. Silver Stream. 708 October 18, 2015 Share October 18, 2015 I would think so, yeah. Applejack is an example too. One could argue that her name was a factor in getting her cutiemark and the fact that she lives with a family that deals with apples, her cutiemark was a no brainer, but she never got her cutiemark till that very moment she made the choice that her heart was with the apple farm and her purpose was to work there and help her community. But honestly, there are seriously a lot of factors to be considered when it comes to a pony getting their cutie mark 1 SILVER STREAM'S POETRY DUMP I am Silver Stream || My Request Shop
LadyCoco 130 October 18, 2015 Share October 18, 2015 (edited) I think that yes and no. I mean, their cutie marks looks basically the same because they make it look like it. They know each other and start the CMC and later discover their marks, its not like they won them before knowing each other. Im sure if they never meet, their cutie marks would be diferents. Imagine if Pinkie Party went wrong and she stayed in the farm. Sure her mark would be a rock... or a pink rock, or something like that and not some party baloons, or.. hum, Rarity didn't find that rock with the diamons inside, maybe it would look like some thing related to sewing. So, in conclution, for me their marks are 50% Predeterminated and 50% own self. Sometimes one half is more than the other, sometimes both are at the same and that is when they discover their marks, when they chose in what half they want to be. Sorry the bad english, hope I make my idea clear. Edited May 29, 2021 by Sochy Correct my english.
Sidral Mundet 1,666 October 18, 2015 Share October 18, 2015 I would hope so, but then again I don't even remotely try to understand Cutie Mark, they are a headache unto themselves. Logic is the beginning of wisdom, not the end.
sweetolebob18 728 October 18, 2015 Share October 18, 2015 (edited) The 3 shows that deal most w Cutie Marks are The Cutie Mark Chronicles (S1E23, IMO the best explanation), The Cutie Pox (S2E5), & Magical Mystery Cure (S3E13) In the Chronicles it is stated there are 2 parts to getting a Cutie Mark 1) realizing what your life goal is 2) accepting it (This is where the Crusaders fell short. When they accepted their goal, then they got their marks) The other 2 shows contradict this. They make it seem like your destiny is imposed on you & your mark is the organ grinder & it makes a monkey out of you. IMO, this is because the Cutie Marks were being interfered with by powerful magic forces that reversed the actual order of things Edited October 18, 2015 by sweetolebob18
TePineer 82 October 20, 2015 Share October 20, 2015 I think so, atleast to an extent. It just seems logical to me.
Wind Chaser 4,768 October 20, 2015 Share October 20, 2015 "Crusaders of the Lost Mark" really showed that cutie marks are not absolute locks between a pony and their destiny. They come up when the pony realizes their talent, showing up as a mark of that one moment when they realize what their greatest strength actually is. The only issue I can think of with the Crusaders is that they're not fully aware of their natural talents yet, in which case their marks are somewhat free to their own interpretation. The best thing about cutie marks is that they're never 100% literal. Natural talents aren't something you can change easily, and predestination is inconsequential to that fact. The show does have some hints that would be consistent with a subconscious knowledge of destiny, but then again the show writers (and Lauren Faust in particular) didn't create the names of the characters, nor did they invent the naming conventions of the franchise. Even so, defining whether or not that's true is not a priority of this show. As long as the messages the episodes are sending aren't directly saying that you're locked into one path and there's nothing you can do about it, there's not much of a problem with it.
Rainblow H. Ash 5,091 October 20, 2015 Share October 20, 2015 That really depends. To be honest, it's really easy to say it's all determined by destiny. After all, the Cutie Mark Crusaders could've been destined to meet, thus guaranteeing that they'd get the marks that they ended up with. We already know they ended up hiding together under a table in the very first episode and they didn't even know each other yet. And we know that even though none of the Mane Six had met each other as kids (save for Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy), that Rainbow Dash caused all of them to realize their special talent and gain their Cutie Marks. I like to think that a pony has a choice when it comes to their cutie mark, but a big theme of the show is destiny so that wouldn't surprise me either. #bringbackmerriwetherwillaims
UnknownFry 169 October 20, 2015 Share October 20, 2015 How one reaches one's ultimate destiny is still largely a product of choice, so yes I believe the element of choice remains a present factor in earning and understanding one's cutie mark.

Yeah, I think that a pony earns their cutie mark when they realize that it is that they meant to be doing in life. It's a product of their own choice. The cutie mark doesn't decide anything for them. Otherwise the mark would appear before the pony comes to their realization.
LHfunk 422 October 20, 2015 Share October 20, 2015 It's like Harry when he had the Sorting Hat whispering in his ear. It was because he chose not be in Slytherin that he wasn't, but he didn't choose to be in Gryffindor, yet he ended up there. His choices affected what happened, but didn't decide it.
Kyoshi Frost Wolf 41,800 October 20, 2015 Share October 20, 2015 I don't think the marks are predetermined, not by any outside force of destiny at least. It seems in the world of FiM, the marks are not predetermined themselves, but the talents of a pony apparently are. That seems to be the case. At least maybe. Cutie Marks have become such a complicated issue. In the flashback for the mane 6, their marks appeared when they realized what they loved to d, so that supports that as well, it not being predetermined. cmarston1 5,959 October 21, 2015 Share October 21, 2015 Well I believe cutie marks are a result of when a pony discovers what he/she wants to do with the rest of their lives/ discover their own destinies for themselves. And that they aren't predetermined except for the talent itself.
