spoiler Season 5 has a theme and it's not cutie marks

The Cutie Map, Slice of Life, Amending Fences, Do Princesses Dream of Magic Sheep?, Brotherhooves Social, what do they all have in common?  They all place secondary and or background characters front and center.  This is a season that emphasizes that there is a world beyond Twilight and her friends and that minor characters can have just as much of an impact on this world as our heroes and I think this is going to play a role in the season finale.  I could see background characters being the ones to get through to Starlight, not the mane 6, and not the CMC like some are predicting.  One character that stands out the most is Diamond Tiara, who had the same kind of self doubt that Starlight's followers have had. Who better to get through to her? 

 

At the very least I expect secondary/background characters to play a role in her reformation.

Right you are. Which was why I never understood why Slice of Life existed since many episodes did better with secondary characters. It was just rushed and messy despite me enjoying some of the quirks shown by a few background ponies. Had they treated Slice of Life like they did the others or split it into more episodes, I would've enjoyed it better.

 

But I do agree with tour theory. In a way, yes I'd say that's what the writers were shooting for. Why hasn't there been one for Cadence? Ugh the world nay never know because she sure does need one.

 

And let's not forget the Treasure Of Griffinstone. And also, Made in Manehatten she'd more light on Coco as a character

Season 5 has multiple themes. A good show interweaves them all throughout the narrative. Cutie Marks, destiny, free will, rising complexity (world building and focus on minor characters), revisiting personal history, and moving on are all themes this season.

Good theory, but there also have been multiple themes for Season 5.

 

Even as such I am not going to disregard Cutie Mark Magic and the toys associated given the title of the finale is the Cutie Re-mark suggesting that Cutie Marks are going to be prominent in the finale.

That's actually a thing that I like about this season.

We are getting a bit more focus on secondary characters which can be interesting and help fleshes out the world more.
