movies/tv Are junior high and high school in anime Interchangeable?

A while back, I made a topic regarding middle school and how underused of a setting it is.

I also said that the closest thing it gets to getting the portrayal it should get is in anime, saying that it's closer to high school in America than our middle school. But this also raises a big question, are junior high and high school settings in anime more or less, the same?

 

Look, both middle and high school in Japan require school uniforms, and in anime, they share similar themes of romance, comming of age, friendship, etc. and both have their fair share of ecchi. If you were to show someone random clips of Another or Assassination Classroom, and not tell them they take place in junior high, chances are, they'll think it's high school. 

 

There's a few differences though, High school is usually used in hentai, while junior high isn't, and there's more actually having sex in high school than just a pervy character or harmless fanservice in junior high. So as far as anime goes, are junior high and high school largely interchangeable?

I don't think I ever watched a school anime around junior high before. It's always high school.

There are a lot of things that are interchangeable, romance/puberty, dealing with school/homework, bullies ect... but I think it depends more on the anime itself as to what is interchangeable and to what extent because you can argue that there are some things from elementary school animes that can also apply to some middle school animes like they are more likely to still have that sense of child like innocence for example.

Actually there is quite a lot of middle school and younger used in hentai, but it is becoming a bit more difficult to find because some countries are starting to outlaw/restrict that stuff but as far as people having sex in cannon you are indeed much more likely to have that in high school anime's.

I don't think Yu Yu Hakusho counts here, while it is true that Yusuke is a middle school student that anime focused much more on action and the supernatural than it did on school itself. There was a bit more focus on that in the beginning of the series but in the middle and end there was hardly any focus on that at all.

The only anime (sorta) revolving around junior high I'm familiar with is Inazuma Eleven, since the characters attend it (even if many of them look older), but it focuses more on them playing football/soccer, so I don't know if it really counts.

Naruto does have kids that are around the ages of middle school when the show starts but it's not a school based anime.
