Gestum 2,493 December 8, 2015 Share December 8, 2015 I don't really see any similarities.
Guest December 8, 2015 Share December 8, 2015 The only things I remember about Sailor Moon from watching it as a kid were short skirts and long legs... What similarities are there between the two places? I see a crystalline tower dominates each cityscape, but are there other similarities or are you only referring to the visuals? cider float 2,539 December 8, 2015 Share December 8, 2015 The whole magical girls/mares in MLP is definitely inspired by anime. I'm pretty sure Lauren Faust got inspiration from the magical girl genre.
chirox the pony 1,336 December 8, 2015 Share December 8, 2015 Well Lauren Faust did say she was inspired by shows like salior moon so it is possible. Whilst I've never watched sailor moon I would like to point out that that structure looks an awful lot like: Atlantis. I highly doubt sailor moon would have invented the concept. 2 No matter how hard I try these ponies will simply never leave me.
Limeblossom 482 December 8, 2015 Share December 8, 2015 I think the MLP series was not the only one with inspiration from Sailor Moon. 1 Japan, where Yo-Kai Watch's second movie has more success than The Force Awakens
Unlikeable Pony 2,699 December 8, 2015 Share December 8, 2015 Nah, crystal cities are a HUGE fantasy cliche, yeah? The concept of crystals is often used in fantasy worlds, and often symbolizes purity or good, and is a common image. There's a reason that TV tropes has a "crystal spires and togas" page after all, as people seem to inherently think that a ultra advanced, whether magically or technologically, place would be a crystal city. And the imagery of a city of towers is also usually used for such cities, as towering buildings give off a sense of awe that low built cities just don't, usually with a prominent "central" building for the ruler. I doubt its taken from sailor moon so much as its just convergent evolution (in a literary sense) in that crystal cities tend to look the same in fantasy.
cmarston1 5,960 December 10, 2015 Share December 10, 2015 I don't really think so. They both are crystal fantasy lands, but I doubt there was any influence form sailor moon to create the empire.
cider float 2,539 December 10, 2015 Share December 10, 2015 (edited) There is quite a resemblance. Like the large main roads that all lead to the castle at the center. And the fact that they are called "Crystal" and have crystal built structures. Oh yeah and both are on shows with magical girls in them. sweetolebob18 728 December 11, 2015 Share December 11, 2015 Well, back in the early 1990s I watched Sailor Moon on TV. But, here in Phoenix they didn't really show much about Crystal Tokyo so I couldn't say. If you really want to know, I suggest you ask Lauren (although I can see some difficulty in doing that)
