Smokescape 58 April 24, 2012 Share April 24, 2012 It was just about an hour ago when I opened up to my entire family and a large majority of friends that I'm a brony. And you know what? I feel fantastic now! What happened is my dad was coming to help me with a math problem. I closed my computer and he suspected me of hiding something. Then he got mad and left. Fast forward about 20 minutes. He gets back home, and I show to him and my mom what I do and enjoy. They were cool with it and even sat there and watch some of the stuff with me from music to fanimations. I then went onto facebook and told all of my friends that I liked it. They were cool with it too. I feel so great right now! Has anyone had a similar experience? 5 I enjoy ponies, music, and gaming. Bang.

Fire_Fly 499 April 24, 2012 Share April 24, 2012 Not very many of the people I talk to know, but the handful that do really don't see me any differently, and some of them have even converted! I'm trying to just gradually let more people know at a steady pace, so there's less potential blowback. I've got an idea! No..... No, wait; it's just a concussion.... York 4 April 24, 2012 Share April 24, 2012 I told my parents a few weeks ago and they were fine with it, (besides my mom thinking it was gay at first) then the next day I wore this hot topic brony shirt to school and got 4 bro hoofs. So yeah I'm glad I finally let it out there instead of being so private about it.

Only my friends know i'm a brony. My parents are another matter. Oh man, do I know how that feels. I expect some hate from people, of course. But I can honestly say, I welcome it. You wanna hate me for something I enjoy? Go right the hell ahead, because in the end, I'm the one enjoying myself while you waste your time hating on something that does not affect you in any way! Squeaker 89 April 24, 2012 Share April 24, 2012 Good for you bro! /)*( I let everypony who knows me know the truth after my 3 day "Why the heck do I like this thing?" period. Most of my old friends and all but my dad (and my slowly bending little brother) don't get it, but I have gotten to meet lots of new friends by being open about it! cuteycindyhoney 13,316 April 24, 2012 Share April 24, 2012 I guess it's because I'm 33, married and female, but I really don't get why people keep pretending that admitting they watch a cartoon has the same impact on someone's life as admitting to being homosexual. As someone who has some very strong bisexual feelings that I never admitted to my parents (for my own reasons, not fear), I find it more then a bit annoying. You're trivializing a very real life altering event that adversely effect so many people. You like a good cartoon? That's fine. Get over yourself. Some time ago there was ONE story of some kid being kicked out of his house for liking the show. To this day I have found no conformation that this event actually took place, and I from time to time go looking. It's all just people quoting the single original post on reddit. On the other hand, there are countless thousands of cases where families outright disowning members for admitting they were homosexual and never speak to them again. If you want to "Come out" to your family, try saying this. "You know that cartoon people keep talking about, "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic"? I tried it, and it's pretty cool. I don't know why people say such dumb things about it. It's just a really fun show to watch." I sincerely doubt they'll even give a darn that you watch a cartoon. I'm sorry if this offends, but it really does trouble me. 6 Thank you Sparklefan1234!!!
Ezynell 2,037 April 24, 2012 Share April 24, 2012 People need to just come and tell everyone. If your confident in yourself, even the few that would have made fun of you will think twice and maybe even give the show a try. I was drawing this picture of Chrysalis rather in a grimdark manner so I didn't suspect anyone would notice it, but then one of my older friends came up and asked "hey, are you a brony?". I just responded with "yea, you?". The usual conversation occurred and he said no, and thought I was kinda weird and the conversation went on a little bit and he started admitting that he watched the show sometimes, then ended up trying to defend himself for watching the show. People be so funny. GAK
Skye Starlight 223 April 24, 2012 Share April 24, 2012 Didn't really keep it a secret from my family... I kept it from my friends cause I didn't know what they'd think but I decided to open up to them one day (and did so by linking doctor who with doctor whooves) and they were cool with it... One of them even told me about her cousins who also like ponies! I was quite content with that... I am prone to leaving both short and long posts as well as with my profile feed... I made this I am so proud of myself!
Jimmy Bronymian 140 April 24, 2012 Share April 24, 2012 Congratulations man! I remember when I told everyone I was a brony, they were all like oh...that sounds stupid. I told my friends not to insult something they haven't seen, so they decided to one up me by watching the show and then they were planning to explain to me why its stupid. It backfired against them and now my dorm is loaded with bronies and pegasisters
Starshine 16,335 April 24, 2012 Share April 24, 2012 This kind of stuff confuses me so. Why the hay some of you feel the need to announce your personal hobby/interest to your family, just because some bronies did it earlier and posted their 'glorious' revelation to their family. I'm sorry if this offends, but it really does trouble me. I take no offense from this whatsoever. I see what you mean, but I've always been an introvert. I've always been afraid of what people thought of me; constantly being judged. So something like this was sorta new for me. For me, being the shy, introverted, safe little hermit I was, this was a tad hard to admit. I'm not saying it's as difficult as admitting that you're bisexual or homosexual, as I know society tends to frown upon that; all I'm saying is that the whole "leaving my shelter" thing was a new experience for me. 2 I enjoy ponies, music, and gaming. I'm glad you were not offended, and I'm also glad you are coming out of your shell. It wasn't just your post I meant though. There are so many of them on every pony site I go to. I still see no need to even mention what TV shows you like to other people. I'm addicted to the show MASH on TV land. Should I stand up before my family and friends and announce it? Once again, i don't mean just your post. The vast majority of them read as if it's just like admitting your personal sexual orientation, right down to phrases like "Coming out of the closet". Sorry, I'll stop now. 2 Thank you Sparklefan1234!!!

I think the reason a lot of us are afraid to admit it is because it's frowned upon (for NO fair of logical reason) in society. I still don't understand myself why it's so looked down on, same thing with liking your own gender. Society is just too full of ignorant people these days. But I'll stop now, too before I go on a rant that belongs in the life advice section. x) 1 I enjoy ponies, music, and gaming. Bang.
caesar15 231 April 24, 2012 Share April 24, 2012 Eh, i ll admit it one day, but my mom said they must be gay when i told her about it, so i didnt really push it, i jsut told her they werent gay and i watched a few epsiodes, but she naturally dismissed it, do really, technically i already told her lol.
Twiliscael 3,960 April 25, 2012 Share April 25, 2012 My parents are cool woth it, however they do joke around about it...in public. My friends and classmates generally tolerate it or even think its funny except for some people who act like they are "better" than o am but really need to take a good hard look at themselves... Disregard that. I tend to take the high road, get stoned, and fly low . . .
KakeiTheWolf 652 April 25, 2012 Share April 25, 2012 I was at my grandmother's house, and, since I was doing google chat with my mom, I decided to tell her everything. I told her about me being a brony, about MLP:FiM, and all the places I follow. She ended up recording the second half of the finale. Awesome. But she still thinks it is weird. Ezio Auditore 702 April 25, 2012 Share April 25, 2012 Actually I did have a similar experience 2 of my friends liked it so I watched an episode and really liked it. I just didnt know how to tell everyone though. I'm kinda popular (not to sound cocky or anything I just know people) so I didnt know how to tell them I liked a little girls show but I had 2 people to back me up so they were fine with it. Theres still the occasional pony joke but it's in a joking matter ^.^
Cirrus 3 April 25, 2012 Share April 25, 2012 My mom and dad know, my siblings know, but my parents respect that I'm 'not entirely ready to tell people yet' so they don't tell people unless they start the convo with: 'So your son told me he likes MLP' or something like that. They're pretty cool with it.
_Flitter 103 April 25, 2012 Share April 25, 2012 I've never been a closet brony, and everyone's okay with it I suppose. Some friends and family don't like the show and think I'm weird for liking it, but they don't hate me or think less of me for it 8) But congratulations! < 3 I waited all my life for this moment & I'm not going to let it slip by!
