Ember Gleam 167 January 4, 2016 Share January 4, 2016 I am sorry if this has already been cleared up in a previous post however there is a question about mlp fim and all previous gens that I am curious about. Why is it that some ponies name is an exact representation of their cutie mark, and how is it that they were named for a cutie mark that they had yet to earn? For example Diamond Tiara. Was she named Diamond Tiara before she got her cutie mark and if not than what do they do just hold out until they get their cutie mark before naming them? Just odd that somepony would name their foal something and then they turn out to have a cutie mark of exactly the same name. Just a thought appreciate any clarity on the matter. Kyoshi Frost Wolf 41,982 January 4, 2016 Share January 4, 2016 Methinks it is a case of the Cutie Mark being more about a representation of who they are or matching who they are. So Diamond had that name and her Cutie Mark, through the power of Equestria destiny magic, she got a mark very much resembling her name and herself. Seems like a good fit. I mean, Cheese Sandwich is named Cheese Sandwich and his cutie mark appeared in the same ironic way and I don't even know what his has to do with him at all, other than his name and randomness.
cmarston1 5,960 January 4, 2016 Share January 4, 2016 Yeah the naming and cutie mark correlation thing is kind of confusing.
Raynoult 32 January 4, 2016 Share January 4, 2016 (edited) Maybe cutiemarks are dependent of names? For example, a pony named "Cherry Smoothie" is more likely to have a cutiemark representing it's name. sweetolebob18 728 January 4, 2016 Share January 4, 2016 IRL, the writer has omniscience. They know what the mark is & match the name to it. In the Ponyverse, Mothers KNOW These Things. We talk about a "mother's intuition", but there it is not a myth & more than a figure of speech. Of course, this gets into a whole Predestination vs Free Will thing. Still, Rarity, Pinkie Pie, & Cheerilee (among others) have cutie marks that are only marginally related to their jobs, so the mark impels but does not compel your choices (Magical Mystery Cure was magically induced, not the way it usually works)

Ok that makes sense. Was just confused about that =)
pyroshark 19 January 5, 2016 Share January 5, 2016 What about button mash. No offence but no parent ive meet including mine approve of video games. So what? 1 After 9 years in development, hopefully it would have been worth the wait "Nope" Team fortress the second lives on!

Well, I don't wanna be "that guy", but isn't Button Mash his fandom name? For all we know, his real name is Rust-bucket, or Matty McFlew. Also, my parents are avid gamers. 2 Check out my voice-acting demo reels on Casting Call Club, if you'd like.
simba86 1,541 January 5, 2016 Share January 5, 2016 the writters and artists make it up as they go,you can't try to rationalize it or try to make it fit into the cartoon world, it is a cartoon and fiction so there are going to be inconsistencies 1 It's better to die on your feet than to live on your knees! Lexamena 391 January 5, 2016 Share January 5, 2016 I think the significance and reasoning behind ponys' cutie marks has evolved over the seasons, especially when the writers decided to make the CMCs become a thing. Also, I don't think they worry about little girls thinking about it too hard.
EverEverOn 346 January 5, 2016 Share January 5, 2016 I always thought the name ahead a part in a pony's destiny.
Humphrey 49 January 6, 2016 Share January 6, 2016 If you have to find a scientific explanation, perhaps there is one. One is formed by the environment. A name could be a representation of the parents' expectation of their children, and parents always create an environment to form their children's characteristics. It is likely that most ponies follows the path their parents build for them. Diamond Tiara, for instance, is mainly influenced by her mom and dad. There are still ponies with cutie marks different with their names, like Babs Seed and Cheerilee. You could also say its all those "destiny" things since everything in MLP universe seems to be arranged.
KatonRyu 1,033 January 6, 2016 Share January 6, 2016 In this instance, I really just repeat the MST3K mantra to myself: "It's just a show; I should really relax." Thinking too deeply about this will probably only make your head hurt, because the reasons are decidedly non-magical: the ponies are toys for kids, so of course the cutie marks and names are connected. In-universe, you might be able to chalk it up to destiny magic or whatnot, I suppose, but anything more detailed than that will probably run into some instance that contradicts it. By all means, continue to theorize, however, since I love seeing theories on stuff like this.
