Thanks to Game Sack (Which is a wonderful YouTube channel that you should totally check out hint hint) I have become fascinated with certain games and systems, specifically the Neo Geo arcade system. This powerful system was an arcade machine but also had a home system counterpart called the AES, which had arcade perfect games but at the cost of the games themselves being very expensive, to $150 and more! There was also a CD system that drastically cut down the price of the games but had loading times which was troublesome for some games.

Anyone else have experience with this system and its games? We can discuss it! What games are your favorites? Got any memories with the arcade system or the AES?

I think my favorite games for the system are Metal Slug, League Bowling, and Windjammers. League Bowling is a surprisingly addictive bowling game and it is really easy to get into. Windjammers, while bieng incredibly difficult, is still a really cool take on the idea of pong. That game needs a modern day reboot.

Metal Slug stayed with me throughout much of my gaming career. It's been a long time since I played because the local arcade removed the cabinet for Metal Slug, but I clearly remember running through the first stage dodging bubbles and slaying mutant crabs.

Thus the quest for Metal Slug begins...

I never had a Neo-Geo, because this system, even to this day, is way too expansive and same goes for the games on that system.

But there have been many rereleases for Neo-Geo games on recent console generations and on steam. The great thing about the Neo-Geo games, is that it has alot of fighting games on it and i love fighting games. Fatal Fury, Samurai Shodown, Garou: Mark of the Wolves, King of Fighters, etc.

I love all those games. :)

I really love most of the games the put out. Metal Slug is one of my favorite run-and-gun arcade games ever and their fighting games are top notch, especially King of Fighters and Garou.

That said their fighting game bosses can go suck a big one

Ah, Neo Geo! A beautifuly underrated arcade system truly! Yup, there's no doubt about it, my favorite series of this system is definitely Metal Slug. All of the games are great in their own, but my favorite will always be 3 and 5. There's been a lot of spin offs and stuff, but, sadly, waiting for an eighth game is like waiting for Half-Life 3 :'( Oh well. Other games i enjoy include Blazing Star, Prehistoric Isle 2, King of Fighters, Fatal Fury, King of the Monsters 1 and 2... the list goes on!

I actually had a friend as a kid who had this. We played it now and then, and from what I remember the best way I can sum up the Neo Geo is with James Rolfe's explanation of why he has never done a nerd episode on the Neo Geo: "It's hard to do a Nerd episode on the Neo Geo because there really weren't a lot of bad games". The Neo Geo's level of arcade porting at the time was legendary. The graphics and controllers made it feel like the authentic arcade experience. That being said it sadly was another example of how the best graphics and most power never seems to win the race, because as you said: the high game price meant my friend only really ever got 3 games for the thing.
