Taking headcanons and smashing them with a sledgehammer

I had an idea where Vinyl Scratch was only being a DJ because it got her good money, and secretly she really liked 80's rock music.

It sounds stupid, but follow me on this.

 

My first attempt was stupid. It went absolutely nowhere and it made Vinyl look like a... I can't describe it. It's bad.

My second attempt didn't go very far because FIMFiction is stubborn and I can't really use Google Docs because [CLASSIFIED].

 

I want some ideas on how to take a headcanon and warping it into something new.

Well, since you're posting here, I can only assume that you're seeking help in writing a story, in which case, I have to ask: where is the story? The idea you have in mind is wonderful—I do love me some alternate depictions of popular fanon characters—but at the moment, that's all it seems to be: an idea. What is the consequence of this idea?

 

Does an inebriated fan of hers hear her listening to her real jams and ask probing questions? Does this lead to conflict?

 

Is Vinyl experiencing a career crisis because she hates the music she has to pretend to like? Does she abandon her job and search for a new career?

 

Does she find herself participating in an '80's rock band on her spare time only to find that it's taking up more and more of it? Does she bring this hobby to the club where she works?

 

These are just a handful of ideas I came up with off the top of my head, but maybe they'll get you thinking. There are many, many more. I love your idea, but a good idea does not a story make.
