Nah, but seriously, I wouldn't go to that place. Kinda hard to believe that the organizer of the meetup thought that it'd be a good idea to take harlem as location.

 

 

They might as well have their next meetups in Syria and Iraq at this point if they want to up the danger excitement. Maybe bringing a brony meetups to those regions will end the war over there and bring people together lol.

I wouldn't trust taking my car in and parking it, plus too far out of the way for a train. I used to teach in East New York, Brooklyn, and it's quite similar. It was a 30-40 minute walk from my house, but you couldn't catch me dead near that school at night (parents even told me they "couldn't be responsible" for what would happen to me ), and I would never park my car there. One of the other teachers had their car stolen on the first day of school, parked in front of the school!

I've never been to NYC or the Unites States in general myself, it's kinda hard for me to believe that there are places in NYC where you'd get killed if you're walking down the street at night. I looked up the location at Google Street View and it looks... well... bad, but it doesn't look like a place where people get killed.

Doesn't look exactly like that, but still pretty bad. Less graffiti, but more dingy, rotting buildings and infrastructure. You'll probably meet a drug dealer on the street on the way to the place.

Certainly not knives or small guns, I'm clearly talking about phones and pepper spray, and if you decide to misinterpret what I say and bring knives and guns, that's on you. Only bring whatever you're allowed to bring, ok?

Maybe they're hoping some military bronies will show up to the con, and they'll unintentionally end up ending the lives of some muggers when they attack the group they think are easy targets. ...To be honest, I never was sure why more armed people didn't do that, just walk around dangerous streets hoping to be jumped, so they can pull out their own gun and save all the people that mugger would kill or stab in the future whether he/she got his/her money or not.

I've spent a decent amount of time in Harlem and the more unsavory parts of the Bronx, i didn't think it was that bad. But maybe that's a matter of perspective since i grew up in a crime-ridden area myself. If you feel unsafe skip it.

Could be a bit of both, but it could also be a matter of expense. Last I remember, East Harlem isn't one of Manhattan's more expensive areas.

Getting a permit for pepper spray is just as hard as getting a gun permit as its classified in the same category same goes with tasers. NY state and by in large NYC like other big government states in the US make it very hard for law abiding citizens to own defensive weapons of any category.  There have been many cases in which things just like pepper spray or tasers were used in defensive scenarios and because that person did not have a permit, was charged with a felony.

 

Besides even if I did, the wolves of Harlem are in packs and would be much stronger than any brony that goes to these meetups. Most of these bronies at these meetups are not muscular at all or would not stand a chance in a fight. We are just there to have a good time and enjoy ponies and are not fighters at all and would get killed or seriously injured just by walking in the neighborhood.

I wanted to post a comment but I didn't want to come off as a jerk. Basically I had wanted to come to at least the monthlys now since Ponycon is kaput, but this location has less than zero chance of me going. Mom already says no each time I say the pony meetup is having a monthly. Harlem is just bad.

What the people in charge of this group is beyond stupid and if the excuse is to save money its a horrible excuse to them. Putting peoples life at risk due to finances is not smart at all and I am surprised bronies of all people knowing how stigmatized they are in even safe areas would even consider having a large meetup in an area which is pretty much a war zone full of drugs murder, crime, rape, and assault. Its bad enough even in daylight, but this meetup is going into the late night, which is basically asking for danger.  They should have had their meetup at another location if the last location was not available, should have been is other popular locations like Cap 21 or Pearl studios that are well large enough and have plenty of rooms for rent.  Even if they were not available NYC is large enough and there are plenty of locations that are cheap enough and available in safe areas.

Like I said nearly impossible to get a permit in NY. NY might as well be like the UK or any other European country as restrictions on personal defensive weapons make it nearly impossible for the average citizen to own one, If you are approved at all its takes nearly a year and alot of money. Even owning a paintball or airsoft gun is illegal in NYC. So the likelihood for anyone having any form of permit is unlikely. The only people that have access to any form of defensive weapons in NY are the criminals since they don't obey laws and the police, the average citizen does not have that right here.

That's where I'm moving this summer. Zero state income tax. Just living in NY state costs you a year salary every 10 years or so. Not to mention very low cost of living with surprisingly fair wages. And wow I had no idea the defensive laws had changed so much. I just never felt the need to have defensive items since I live in low crime rate zone. I've been out at late night and never see anyone in residential areas. If I do see people it's by stores and businesses.

Harlem is basically a giant slum, war zone in which you have to be hyper vigilant of your surroundings and never walk alone at night or you are putting yourself in serious danger. The crime map shows that as there are more crimes than people. Over 1500 crimes for every 1000 people.
