So Britain will be holding a referendum tomorrow on whether to stay in the European Union or not. The polls in Britain have been neck and neck so I really can't call anything. Honestly I'm quite exhilarated but get the feeling I'm going to be disappointed in the end. Personally I believe Britain should leave; I may or may not discuss my reasons but generally I view a decentralization of power as a good thing.

So what do you guys think? Would Britain be better off as an independent state? Do most people even care, lol?

I think they should stay, but my opinion probably isn't very valuable. I've read some of the reasoning behind leaving the EU, and I don't know if the problems leaving it would supposedly fix, such as current immigration policies and product regulations, are actually problems at all because I'm on the other side of the ocean. I still don't think those problems are worth leaving the EU though and risking economic instability and an overall weaker position on the world stage.

It's a bad idea, but I'll let someone more charismatic explain why

Eh, I've already seen this but I feel like critiquing the video...

Oliver has surprisingly few points to make for a 15 minute video, and even less substance to back them up with:

  • "Immigration policy may not change"
  • "Hysteria of over regulation is a red herring"
  • "The cost of membership is reasonable"
  • "The economic benefits of staying out-way the costs"

I think most of the controversy comes from the idea that Britain would lose out on EU markets without complying to EU demands, but I would argue that Britain would actually have more diplomatic and economic leverage outside of the EU.

For example, both Norway and Switzerland are non-EU members but have virtually unlimited access to the EU market. Yes it cost some money to maintain these trade agreements with the EU, but it's a fraction of what Britain has to pay per-capita. On top of that Norway and Switzerland don't have to abide by the ridiculous business regulation EU members are subjected to. It isn't a surprise to me that both Norway and Switzerland have a gdp per-capita more than double that of Britain.
