Another thought on ponies eating meat

In the new episode "The Fault in our Cutie Marks," (don't worry not really a spoiler), Applebloom mentions something smells "fishy" in the applesauce.

 

Now why would applesauce, a food product ever smell fishy in pony cuisine? That is unless someone accidentally added fish into it. Let's push this a little further.

First of all, it's a figure of speech, and I don't know why you think that's at all literal. That applesauce doesn't actually smell fishy. It's merely suspicious. 

 

Second of all, just because ponies don't eat meat doesn't mean other animals don't. We've seen quite clearly that not every creature is sapient in Equestria, and just because meat isn't a part of pony diets doesn't mean they're completely appalled by the consumption of it. Perhaps they merely view it as unhealthy for them, and see it more as food for pets or other sapient species, like griffons.

Earth horses don't have a gall bladder & thus can't digest fat.  If EQ ponies are the same they could eat fish.  They do eat eggs (Sisterhooves Social) so they are not all total vegetarians.
