We all know Twilight is very smart, and Sunset Shimmer showed almost as much magical ability, and was also a personal protege of Celestia, so it makes sense for her to be able to suss out maths. She also became a math tutor as a side thing in order to give herself some extra credit activity after school. It also serves as a bridge between Rainbow Rocks and Friendship Games although I see the book connecting between the former and the Holiday 2014 comic special.
