Could the Tantabus been nearly unstoppable?

As it's an entity conjured up by a person's mental faculty, and technological advances are null in the series, I don't think it could even escape  Luna's mind to begin with. Even if it did, it would be inherently linked to the person whose mind it came from in the first place, so where its power could grow solely depends on how emotional fraught they are. Under the right circumstances, maybe its power could grow enough to be a substantial threat, but the likelihood of it escaping the mind to begin with is an impossibility that stops the idea dead in its tracks.

If it was actually able to escape from Luna's mind, than it could be a really big threat against Equestria, but we don't really know if it could really escape and make it into the "real world" from the dream world.

Does nobody in this thread realize that the Tantabus DID escape from Luna's mind?  It was explained early in the episode that the Tantabus had grown powerful enough from feeding off her guilt and self-loathing that it was able to escape her mind and infect the subconsciousness of the Mane 6 and, eventually, all of Ponyville.

What this thread should be about is what would happen if the Tantabus escaped from the immaterial realm and manifested itself as a material entity.  If that happened, I don't think Celestia would be properly equipped to dealing with it, seeing as how Luna's jurisdiction almost entirely revolves around the Immaterium.

The Tantabus already was nearly unstoppable, the combined efforts of the entire population of Ponyville weren't enough to prevent it almost escaping into the real world.  It was only when the Mane 6 managed to convince Luna that she didn't need to hold onto her guilt any longer that the creature ceased to be, but that doesn't really answer if Luna would be able to vanquish the Tantabus in the same manner if it had escaped from the realm that Luna has a unique power over, into a realm that she does not.

We know from Luna herself that if the Tantabus had managed to escape then the real world would have become a living nightmare.  What would interest me is to see if everypony would experience the whole world as being their own personal nightmare, or everypony would experience the same, shared nightmare version of the world.

Yet all it did was trying to escape. When Luna brought all ponies into one dream, it did not stand and fight but desperately tried to retreat the only way it knew how:  by cutting its way through into the material realm. Even the nightmares it caused seemed more like a side effect of its presence rather than some deliberate plan. What we have here is a weak, frightened sprite, not a powerful dream demon capable of higher cognitive functions.

People are constantly saying that Luna doesn’t have special powers outside the dream realm, so what makes you think Tantibus would have them? Sure it could cause a living nightmare, but it also means you could destroy it by “conventional” means without having it spring around form dream to dream. Luna is just being her usual melodramatic self, her panicked ramblings of catastrophe fueled by guilt and ineptness. I wonder if she was more afraid of the Tantibus or her sister’s reaction.
