Family tree and alicorn aging

Had the hardest time deciding where this should go. The reason why I'm asking is for my fanfic, but the entire question has more to do with the show. If it needs to go to creative resources, my bad :P

In trying to find out about Luna's and Celestia's family, I've run into a few snags.

I found that Lauren confirmed on her DA that Luna and Celestia have no other siblings, and that Prince Astron--Blueblood?--is a distant relation.

"He's the great, great, great... nephew on Celestia's and Luna's mother's side, about 52 times removed, roughly speaking..."

So, from this we know the family tree is rather extended.

Then there's Cadence. The main problem is her age.

During Twilight's flashbacks, Cadence appears to be around the same age as the present day mane six. Later on, though, she appears to have aged normally, now looking to be the same age as Shining Armor. So, she would have to have been born more recently.

This contradicts fan-theories that alicorns age differently. They could age at a normal rate, but cease the process completely once they hit a point of maturity, like Elves in LotR. But even that doesn't work completely:

On Lauren Faust's DA page, March 20, 2011: "...Luna is not yet full grown, and some sort of evil magic turned her into Night Mare Moon. When she grows to an adult..."

What do you guys think?

Granted, I'm not trying to apply a scholarly amount of logic to the show, it's just artistic license can only go so far.

Alicorns could have a different growth rate than normal ponies. Cadance could have looked like a 12 or so year old in the flash-back, when she was actually hundreds or thousands of years old.

I really just kinda accepted the age thing in alicorns for what it was and assumed that it was some kind of magic thing and power of friendship thing...now that I think about it...you're right about the inconsistencies...

Maybe they can choose their age to an extent, or are the age of how mature they are...that's one possible theory. It's all up to guessing at this point, but I love to see other people's responses. :)

I apologize for any inconvenience but for the time being my MLP stop motion project is on hold.

Good point. Following this, that would mean that Celestia is ungodly old if the growth rate is that slow. Either that or Luna's growth was stunted during her time on the moon lol.

I believe that on her "Ask Celestia" page, (I know, not exactly Canon, but it's pretty darn close.) she said that they were only about a thou years apart.

Personally, I believe Luna and Celestia are pretty much Godesses. Immortal, and very powerful. And somehow a royal family began, and the royal family contains Luna/Celestias DNA, and so every once and a while if a pony is born into the Royal Family, there is a chance they are an Alicorn. These Alicorns are rare, and while not on Celestia level power, are still very powerful ponies. They also are not immortal.

I think alicorns age slower becuase way back when Discord ruled teh earth, Celestia and Luna were the ones who stopped him and imprisoned him into stone. He also said he hadn't had so much fun in eons, meaning he was in stone for quite some time. But who knows, maybe those two are special?

Agreed

Alicorns can live for thousands of years, or are completely immortal. (based off of what we know about Luna and Celestia) My guess is that even though she looks a certain age, she is most likely much older

That could be a possibility, but the validity is questionable when you consider the fact that they were parented. I just sort of assumed alicorns were all very powerful creatures, but their abilities, strengths, and weaknesses varied.

For all we know, they (Celestia and Luna) could very well be the strongest of their kind, or very weak by a mass comparison.

In greek mythology, God/desses were born, not just created. And this show has a lot of Greek Mythology in it. Gods in Greek Mythology are also not all-powerful beings, which would again fit with Celestia, Luna and Discord.

And since the only other Alicorn we can compare to the spacial sisters is Cadence, who seemed to rather good at magic, but we didn't get to really see anything big from her, so from the evidence, I'd say Celestia and Luna are powerful Alicorns. Besides, they can raise celestial bodies, and have lived well over 1000 ears, thats a pretty impressive feat.

My theory is, yes, all alicorns are immortal, but once they hit a certain point of maturity they stop aging.

The theory that their growth doesn't necessarily stop at that point wouldn't rule out immortality.

Oh yeah, I'm not disputing that at all. I've picked up on the mythological references, too. This concerns alicorns as a whole, though, assuming there are more than just the three we know of (the sisters' parents and all that).

I don't consider alicorns immortal. This was a fan based video that I'm going to ref but it seems pretty correct. Discord wiped out most of teh alicorn population with drought and famine back a longggg time ago. If Alicorns were immortal, this wouldn't have effected them, however, Luna and Celestia survived this drought and famine. So I think They're special, and all the other alicorns age normally or slower. Edited by love4shadow

Again, my theory would be that if there were other Alicorns, they would be members of the Royal Family. The Royal Family would not consist of solely alicorns (Blueblood, and Shining Armor and Twilight when you take fr account In-Laws), and Alicorns would be rare. However, they wouldn't be the almighty goddesses like Celestia and Luna, but just a gifted Unicorn with wings, really. And they'd be born to a couple who had royal lineage in their bloodline.

And regarding the sister's parents, who knows. Though clearly whatever they/it was is long gone now, or else I'd bet we would have seen it by now.

Very possible. Their parents could be long gone or not even part of that world.

They've been showing pieces of their history at the beginning of each season, so if that pattern continues we could see more in season three.

Not necessarily. Alicorns may have an extreme growth spurt that makes them go from filly/colt to mare/stallion once they become 1000 years old or so.

Unlike me.

F-f-f-forever short! :(

But in all honesty, great theories. I feel like I've been brain farting all this time. :P

You gotta wonder how those alicorns handle living so long... I mean, it's gotta be real depressing sometimes, having to live to see many generations of people you knew dying off and yourself unable to die with them- I wouldn't be surprised if Celestia cries herself to sleep sometimes... :(
