In "Cart before the Ponies", when Rarity recalls her childhood, and getting second place in creativity, should her flashback have made the first place winner Toola Roola, a g3 pony who canonically wins every art contest, BECAUSE her talent was art, rather than Derpy, who just seemed out of place as the artistic winner, with no explanation as to why?

Because NM likes the character, and other prior gen characters, so he tends to find creative ways to try and include them in the show.

Derpy's inclusion as the winner is an example of ironic (or possibly even satirical) humor. The punchline being that the least expected winner still comes on on top.
