How?

xD hold on let me download Gimp. I am surprised you didn't know  , Gimp's main feature is photo manipulation not drawing...

EDIT: Colors>Levels...

you should see 2 black to white bars with arrows on them.

The first one is the one you want (the last one controls brightness essentially)

on the first bar...

Bring the black arrow >>>>>

and the white arrow <<<<<

don't worry about anything else. Just mess with those two arrows.

Black arrow controls the darks, White arrow controls the lights, grey arrow controls the mediums, but for this application you only need the darks and lights.

Also remember to put the drawing into black and white because trust me, it's not when you scan it.

you can do this by going to Colors>Hue-Saturation.

Then find the Saturation slider and drag it all the way to the left. This bar just controls the "richness" of the color in the screen. All the way to the left should result in no color.

Let me know if you need more help

Never heard of it. I use brightness-contrast, but it doesn't seem to work very well >_>

I personally feel Sai is the easiest to use, but it does lack a few features in my opinion.

just don't use really cheap programs, Paint or Paint.net i don't really like.

I mean like compared to something like photoshop there would be a lot more tools in it (I think you may be able to download them to Sai or something.)

But from my experience Sai does not have transparency though.

SAI doesn't have transferable transparency which it doesn't need because its a painting program

99% of all Photoshop tools are for photo manipulation. I can only think of one tool I used in photoshop and that is the brush... what else do you use ._.?

Depends what kind of painting you are doing i suppose..

Burn, Dodge, and Gradients can be used to add different effects to what you are making.

You should never *ever* use burn or dodge for a painting. It's one of the Photoshop sins! :(

Anything that utilizes layers and masks should allow you to paint line art. I use Paint Shop Pro 7, which, one, is old and two, would probably run you 100 bucks. Unfortunately, I don't have any kind of freeware to suggest for you, but I'm pretty sure you'll need, at the very least, a program which utilizes layers. Maybe that could cut down on your search time?

Dodge and Burn will destroy us all!

I use a variety of programs Sai, Inkscape, PS:CS6 Beta, PS:CS5 and Gimp 2

But main thing you would need would be layers to do coloring.

I don't even use layers... It depends on your preference I guess.
