Mr. Tesla

They forgot to mention that Edison also electrocuted cats. But poor Nikola Tesla. I'm sure in the next decade or so the textbooks and schools will give him the recognition he deserves.

I won't take from the genius that was Edison but from the many books and documentaries about their work, Edison always appeared to be an arrogant ass. At least I've seen more of Tesla's brilliance being recognized recently.

I'd like to think America will get better about that, but perhaps I'm just being naive.

I have this issue with expecting more out of the average Americans than I should.

Thanks to that Edison, we're as a civilization stuck with his shitty Direct Current, when we could use a much stronger and much cheaper Alternative Current for decades.

Tesla's idea for the tower probably would have fried everyone's brains before it was much of a contribution to society, but we have no way of knowing cause it was never turned on.

Also Tesla was Awesome

also..

It's also said that Edison electrocuted an elephant along with cats and dogs.

I can neither confirm nor deny myself being the cause of electrical related malfunctions. Anyways, you wouldn't happen to have a jar of replacement magic smoke would you?

Thomas Edison invented the concept of the modern research laboratory, and that's about it. People give him credit for everything that came out of his lab. Much like Steve Jobs, he just told his employees..."This is what I want. Make it work!"

Yes, Steve Jobs did this too. So many people think he rolled up his sleeves and invented the ipod iPad and iPhone. All he did was say to his development crew. "It would be neat if you made me something like this!" They pulled it off, and Steve took all the credit!

Not to mention these concepts had come out a while ago. Like Edison, Jobs was good at his sales pitch. Edited by PinkieDaShy

ummm... pretty much everything except cell phone chargers uses AC...

Also, one of the big things about Steve Jobs was his incredible ability to read markets. Yes, tablet PCs came out years ago. But they came and went without consequence, as did smaller touch devices.

Jobs started out small. He came up with the ideas for the iPod and iTunes, which changed the music industry. There were mp3 players before then, and there were online music stores, but none did very well. Portable CD players still reigned supreme, and piracy was much more prevalent due to it being so much easier than buying music online. iTunes completely changed that by providing all (or most) of the music you want in one, extremely easy to use store. You click a song, or an album, and you buy it. Then you click another button and it syncs to your iPod. This was crazy back when it came out. Not to mention that he was also highly skilled at selling things, which is why the iPod succeeded where other mp3 players failed.

Anyway, iPod also started getting people used to using finger gestures to command their devices. The gestures made sense, and felt more like turning a dial than selecting things from a menu. Want to turn up the volume? Turn it up.

Eventually, the click wheel became a touch wheel, and only after that did a full touch screen make it into the iPod.

Actually, the idea for the iPad came up years ago, but Jobs held off on it because he knew it wouldn't sell well. It was just another tablet PC, and it would come and go much like the others did. So he used the iTouch and iPhone to prep the market, one could say. To get people comfortable with an all-touch device. After the iPhone did amazingly, then the iPad was revealed.

It also came at a crucial point. With smartphone tech rapidly picking up speed, it opened up a new possibility for tablet PCs; old ones were created by taking a laptop and scaling it down to be thinner and lighter. You got less processing power than the average laptop, but at similar battery life. This is unacceptable for a portable device. But the iPad was made by taking an iPhone and scaling it up. Add some more processors, and some more battery, and you have a iPad. It's still less than a laptop, but that's what it's marketed as, unlike older tablet PCs.

Unfortunately, there are enough idiots willing to pay way more than Apple products are worth, and that keeps the prices high :(

Nay, for decades.

There was this article that said that for at least twenty (or thirty, I forgot) the entire industry on earth used DC, not until someone did something that everyone started to use AC.

Couldn't find it :/

AC has been used since 1891.

Every electronic device uses DC. The AC line voltage has to be changed to DC, or your devices would go PSST-FOOOM, BANG! That's why those little boxy things on the end of the power supply cords are called "A-C ADAPTERS" They adapt the AC and change it to DC at the voltage-wattage needed by the device.
