I have noticed a pattern for the villains turning into monsters whenever they use Equestrian Magic.

Sunset Shimmer turned into Demon Sunset because of her lust for power and jealousy.

Human Twilight turned into Midnight Sparkle because of her feeling of isolation and peer-pressure.

Gloriosa Daisy turned into Gaia Everfree because of desperation.

Juniper Montage turned into Juniper Monstar because of her jealousy.

What do they all have in common? Negative feelings.

But when the Humane 7 use Equestrian magic, they 'pony up', as the fandom puts it. Why? Because of their friendship.

So in other words, the reason why Equestrian magic turns the antagonists into raging she-demons is because of their negative emotions, and the reason why it gives the heroes their magic is because of their friendship.
