Tempest Shadow(small book spoilers)

I just finished The Stormy Road to Canterlot and the prequel comic and apparently her whole motivation is her broken horn.

Come on, is she seriously the first unicorn to break her horn? It should be as common as a broken leg and ponies should know exactly what happens. In the show they filed Rarity's horn at the spa so you'd think they grow constantly.

The broken horn isn't her motivation for being evil. It's the emotional journey that followed that Ursa event. Also, that creature is inherently magical.

Also it broke very low at the base, so it may not have been able to grow back. Actually we know it can't grow back. Why? Because the movie says so. ;)

That, and -- as a certain episode recently showed -- it's possible for Pony anatomy (e.g., manes) to be affected in ways beyond magic's ability to fix.

It's a oddly specific stretch, but it is what it is.

It's not the broken horn itself that made her walk the wrong path, it's what came as consequence: Lost control of her magic, and destroyed her dreams of attending the School for Gifted Unicorns. Oh, and feeling abandoned and betrayed by Glitter Drops and Spring Rain (who are quite gorgeous mares BTW  ) didn't help :muffins:

Okay, first of all an Ursa hitting you isn't magic. And it was the wall that technically broke the horn, not the Ursa.

My point is broken horns should be a well known phenomenon. A doctor or somepony should have been able to tell her "It'll grow back in six months" or "Sorry, you're permanently handicapped." in that case she could go off looking for a new cure nopony'd ever heard of.

Instead she hung around for a long time wondering what would happen and having no idea what to do.

We don't know that, as Equestria generally doesn't detail how all magic works. There are many examples in literature and fantasy media in which a magical creatures proximity can do damage or weaken something. Even non magical but metaphysical beings have this ability often attributed.

I believe there is no frame of reference in the show that suggests that a unicorn horn would or would not grow back after such an event. However, with the inclusion of the film we now have a cannon explanation.

Enter Storm King who promises her a cure. Also isn't there some dialog from Twilight that implies it is what it is?

He horn is broken to beyond repairing. She became  a crippled unicorn, just as how we when broke our spine  and become paralyzed because its beyond repair. Just as many said, Tempest wanted to find a ways to get her magic back or to be healed. So with Storm king filling her thought that he's all powerful, got her to join him in a exchange to grant her magic and revenge against the equestria.

Okay, I just think it's bad writing when a story presents something that should be common as if it's never happened before, not saying I'm not interested in the movie anymore.
