It is explained (and she does respond, emerging from the portal) at the end of Friendship Games; effectively, the Friendship Games movie took place at the same time as the events in the S5 season finale, which I won't spoil for you, but explain why Twi was out of touch.

That scene is right there before the end credits roll on the DVD/Blu-Ray/Netflix version of Friendship Games. Princess Twilight clearly said she didn't get Sunset's messages because of a Time Travel that's explained in Season 5. Got it, @donttellmum?

You should always check the credits (usually with good music), because at the middle of them (or just after) there is always a final "extra scene" or animation added "for the fans" [the DVD versions of Rainbow Rocks and Friendship Games had those plus deleted scenes on the extras].

FG had its sour moments, but it has some pretty good parts too - the final "boss battle" with midnight sparkle for example.

It was just not as good compared to Rainbow Rocks, mostly because there only a few good songs in Friendship Games IMO

FG is pretty much a movie length introduction to the character of SciTwi, and also her redemption of course (as a side bonus, we get to see a redeemed Sunset fully embracing the magic of friendship, and gaining an "angel" form to match her earlier "demon" one)

Dashie's motivational speech/song is 20% more awesome of course too

So that's one of the reasons I am looking forward to the new variable-length format of the EqG series - the movies are too long for something like introducing a new character, and much of the third movie was just padding to length for the format. The eps released so far though are basically just webclip-length shorts though, so I am hoping we get more depth soon.

You should really get to at least S6 in the main FiM series before you go on to the shorts, but there is no pony crossover in the fourth movie, so no reason you couldn't watch that before FiM. FiM has a LOT more depth than the EqG movies though, so fleshes out the characters you see in EqG a lot more.

I would suggest the movie next, and optionally the summer shorts, but avoid the triple episode ("dance magic/movie magic/mirror magic") that follows Everfree chronologically until you are more caught up on pony - as it has spoilers in it for S5/S6 of FiM (ok, mild ones, but still)

Everfree represents a divergence to some degree though; the characters are becoming more established in their own right/development than just shadows of their pony counterparts (although pinkie is always pinkie, sometimes VERY pinkie :D)
